well well, the inevitable happened, my timing belt gave out. i couldnt believe it. one night when i was out with my friends, the rpms stuttered than died. i thought maybe i drained the battery with my system. so i tryed to restart it. it turned over, and over, and over. but nothing. so i got a jump. again, it went over and over. forget it, so i had my buddies and i push it into a parking lot for the night. all night i was thiking of what it could be?? the next morning i get it towed home (it only cost me $5 for 10 miles!!!! thanks AAA). so i go searching. i immediatly think of the fuel pump or filter. nope its getting fuel. then i think of the ignition system. WHOA, its not getting spark. i found it!!!! whoo hoo. after hours and hours of trying to get that stupid ass coil out, it comes out but checks out ok!! damn it. so i thought for sure it was the ignition power transistor. for $130 it better be the right part. i put it in and....nothing   luckily i get to return it. so then i say F--- it!! i take it to the pros. the next day they tell me the news. the timing belt has worn away where the cams arent even moving. #@%#@%#@%#@%. and then the monster blow. the valves are broken and the engines trashed. :barf: so what im saying is if anyone of you guys has a sympton like this, and you dont know what it is, well take a look at the timing belt. it may look like it has teeth on the belt like mine did, but down by the crank, the teeth were worn away to nothing. so have someone turn the car over while you check to make sure that the cams are in fact moving, if not, well, im sorry....its tooo late.

Sucks that your engine is trashed. Yet, it can be salvaged with new valves, just as long as nothing else was ruined. Next time spend the $200 and get the belt, auto tensenor and waterpump and save yourself tons of cash.

wow, talk about a bad day. I have heard to watch out for the timing belts on these models. I have a 94 talon es myself, that I bought from my girlfriend, and before i bought it from her, the timing belt went, but didnt cause any other damage, luckily. SO, after hearing incidents like these, im scared to death of it going again. The engine only has 67k on it, and the belt went at 45k. So i dunno how much longer I have on it, or how to keep an eye out for it, since i dont do any of my engine work myself. Any ideas would be great.

*sigh* . . . interference engines . . what a brilliant idea :(
non-interference and timing chains would be too much to ask for..

well they say to change your timing belt every 60,000 miles, so youre in good shape. my car had 140,000 miles on it, and i dont know if the timing belt was original, if it was, that would be some amazing feat. but definately change it every 60,000 or so just to be safe. now thats for cars that are driven normally. if you redline a lot and tend to stay in the upper RPMs, that belt has a lot more stress than it would normally. for the problems that it causes if it goes, its WORTH IT.

abstraction you are right timing chains would be nice, those damn nissan engineers and their SR20 must be doing something right.

heh.... even the RSX has timing chains if i'm not mistaken.. but hey... these are things you should expect when you get a DSM..

"it's not a bug... it's a feature" ;)
