Well im new here and i just got a 1990 Laser with the 1.8L engine. Im lookin to get some power out of it as of now it aint enough (is it ever enough). Im want to stay n/a and avoid major engine work. i dont want any major hp jus a little more but im having trouble finding parts for this model. Will the 2.0 parts fit the 1.8? Is they any short shifter kit for this car. Headers? i can only find stuff for 2.0 and most from pace setter. Any help would be apreciated Thanks guys

hey sorry to say this.. but your pretty much screwed.. i have a 1.8 and there is like nothing you can do.. what i am doing its droppin a 2.0 nt.. makin that fast.. and then eventually bore it out to 2.2 and put a turbo kit on it.. so all in all i'd save up and do some major engine work..

they can run anywhere between 650 and 900 dollars.. im gettin an old used one from my friend for real cheap and just rebuilding it.

An engine swap is a big job, and not really worth it, unless you're swapping to a rebuilt turbo motor. The transmission fits, but you also need the ECU, wiring harness, coil packs, intake and exhaust manifolds, larger clutch disc, pressure plate, and I believe the driver's side motor mount. Then you'll have paid for basicly a stock 2.0. If you MUST have a 2.0, it would be much more cost effective to sell your car and buy one. If you're feeling adventurous, I've posted a FAQ on DSMtalk about turbocharging the 1.8.

thanks for your reply. Yeah i read ur post on putting in a turbo in the 1.8 and i think im going that route. i will rebuild the current motor i have and go from there. How much hp will i put down with a T3/T4 with 8-9 psi. Also, the ca18det is a 1.8 turbo, will any parts from that fit my motor

Just buy a junked 2.0L FWD Turbo car, rebuild the engine and tranny and drop the whole thing in to ur 1.8. This is what i was gonna do this weekend but i got t-boned by a Chevy Caprice so my baby is out of action for now. There is a car in MA for $425 it's a 2.0L FWD Turbo 5-speed then while rebuilding the motor bore it to 2.2 and u'll be able to push 220HP or more on the stock motor. then just add a few goodies and ur all set
