Finally my eclipse is almost ready to get back on the road. I haven't been able to drive it since June 03'. Engine was completely blown, threw a rod threw the oil pan{ouchh!}. Anyway so I picked up a junker engine off Ebay for $400{yeah thats a steal} everywhere else it was like $3,000. But it was a heavily used engine 117,000 miles. So I got a Howell Performance bottom end kit with 8.6 comp pistons{going turbo later}. While they are working on it I'm getting a new head gasket and timing belt. I'm also getting the head ported and polished. My question is what else can I have done that will produce some good performance gains? I was thinking of boring out the throttle body and port and polishing the intake manifold, but how much? I know stock our throttle body is like 52mm, is 57mm to large? Also keep in mine I plan on adding Crane cams later. What about valve jobs? I've heard people talking about 3 angle valve jobs, would that help performance? In the end I want to be able to run turbo- starting with Star stage 2{hopefully eventually going to a bigger turbo}- and at least a 50 shot of Nos. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please nothing negative I'm asking cause I don't know. Also before someone says it I tried the search.

Thanks

It's a bit of a mission to build a non turbo motor then go turbo with it later. You'd be better off building it for one or the other. Thats a pretty low compression for a non turbo, so just because of that, trying to get way more performance gains out of mods is kind of like trying to catch up to where you should be with a higher compression ratio. Check out the Tech article on head flow numbers and mabye go with a different intake manifold rather than port out the stock one. The way the runners are on the DSM manifolds makes it hard to port more than about 2 inches into them, so to get more performance you would need to get it extrude honed, and for the cost you might as well get a new manifold. As far as the throttle body goes, I don't think you could outflow it with a non turbo, even if you got a slight gain with a larger TB I think you could invest the money somewhere more useful.

Head Flow Tech.

You might consider Exile Racing for the head work. One of the head guys over there is an all-motor guru from 2GNT and can likely help you make the best use of your money for now and later. It would be pointless to spend big money to make power now only to have to replace the components when you go turbo.

I say you build up the tuning aspects of the motor in the meantime. ake care of your fuel system and guage requirements. Get a good idea of how things are supposed to look when thigns are running normal. This will be an immense help when the boost is applied later. You're going to have to upgrade your fuel system anyways, may as well get started now, eh?

Thanks for your help. What should be done to upgrade the fuel system? The stage 2 Star kit comes with a upgarded fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. I'm also planning on adding an Apexi S-AFC. Do I need to replace the fuel rail and injectors with higher performance parts? Yeah, I know 8.6 is low for a non-turbo that's why I'm looking for other mods to try to give me additional performance for right now without causing problems when I add the turbo. So is there any engine work I can have done while the engine is apart? Or should I just save my money until I get the turbo? I'm just trying to keep from having to have the engine taken apart again once its finished.
