cam gears are used to advance and retard timing, therefore HP gains and torque gains, if you go for the AEM ones make sure they are the new 5 bolts series as i have heard the 3 bolt series comes lose quite often and that can cause problems for you.
 
A cam gear will rotate your cam shaft that will open and close your intake and exhaust valves (allowing your engine to "breathe"). Just be careful if you are going to mess with them because if you screw up your timing you will screw up your engine.
