How do you adjust base timing on a 2g?

I've heard from someone that you can only use your CAS on a 1g to adjust base timing. It didn't really make any sense to me why you could use the CAS to adjust base timing on a 1g but couldn't use it to adjust timing on a 2g...........

So.......how do I adjust base timing on a 2g? Do I have to take off the crankshaft pulley to do this or what?WTF
 
Not totally sure on the 2gb's, but I know on the 2ga's, you can NOT adjust base timing without installing a 1G CAS. I think I've read that you can adjust it on 2gb's, but I'd do a search to be sure.
 
Its kinda funny how the 2g's were made. The 95-96 have no adjustable CAS, but they do have the grounding port on the firewall that is needed to adjust timing(you simply ground it when you adjust timing so the ECU does not readjust the timing back to where it was). The 97-99 have an adjustable CAS but no grounding port on the firewall. It appears from what Ive seen, the 97-99's need DSMLINK to set the base. DSMLINK has a feature that automatically "grounds" the port so you can manually adjust the CAS. On the 95-96 all that is needed is to utilize a adjustable CAS. Maybe there is another way around this for the 97-99 but I know when you try to adjust it, the ECU moves it right back to where it was. If Im wrong hopefully someone can chime in.
 
I hope you're right, but I was told there is no way to ground the ECU on my car. Do you have a picture of the port I should be looking for?
 
Im almost 100 percent positive the 96 is like the 95 but I guess you will let me know when you look :thumb: . The port is brown and is located towards the middle of the firewall. You have to remove the cap also on the connector. Notice it is almost right above the proportioning valve. Let me know how it turns out. Quick note: Regardless if you have the port or not, with DSMLINK you can ground out the port and adjust timing manually.

Much appreciated. I'll be a very happy person if you're right. In fact I'm almost positive I've seen that connector in there and always wondered what it was for. At the moment I've just blindly set my CAS to the middle position.

Now if you could just email me a timing light....
 
Hold up. I need DSMLINK to adjust Base timing? Are you F***in serious?WTF So, basically I need to get a $400 DSMLINK in order to adjust base timing?

How does everyone alse do it when they change their timing belt? How does the dealer adjust base timing when the timing belt has been done? Do they use DSMLINK as well?WTF

Ever since I've changed my timing belt I've been getting serious problems with the car jerking back and forth at WOT. Might the unadjusted base timing be causing this problem? I changed my plugs and wires and they're in good shape so they're not the problem........
 
The dealer doesnt change timing. If the timing belt was done correctly you should have no issues. And I believe DSMLINK is 595 but you need a 95 EPROM ECU:( I would check for boost leaks as far as the jerking back and forth goes. I suppose it could also be fuel cut.
 
The timing is done 100% correctly. All marks and pins line up exactly as they're supposed to, so this isn't the problem. I have yet to check for a boost leak although I highly doubt this is what's wrong but you never know. One thing I forgot to mention is that I've also installed a Greddy type-rs when I changed my belt. The mounting flange wasn't the original one designated for the DSM so I simply used some JB weld and squeezed that thing onto the stock plastic intercooler piping. Might this be causing a boost leak?
 
YES that could cause a boost leak. Do the test, and if it comes out fine then at least we have 1 possibility eliminated.

Your jb weld solution most likely leaks, and if it doesn't if you havent tested your car in the last 30 days and you play with it often I'm betting you have a boost leak elsewhere anyways.

Is your new RS recirculated? (sorry, i know)
and I would imagine if you can clean out all that jb weld get a 1g flange and drill holes for the greddy.

Yes, the bov is recirculated. I'm getting some hard pipes very soon so if there's a boost leak that should fix it.
I tried building one of those boost leak testers but I can't find a f***ing pressure gauge at the local hardware stores anywhere:mad: Are there any alternative boost leak devices that don't require a pressure gauge.

And there's one more thing I was wondering about. If it's not possible to adjust base timing on a 2g without DSMLINK is it even possible for the base timing to be off a couple of degrees than standart? Does the ECU automatically configure the correct base? See, I want my base timing to be normal, I don't want to either retard or advance it. I just want it to be at it's appropriate degree.
 
My boost leak tester does not have a gauge. I just use the gauge on the regulator of the air compressor. If your timing belt is aligned correctly your timing should be set right.

So..........it does have a gauge then? The problem is that I don't have a air compressor either and I don't want to spend all that money on a boost leak tester.
 
Lets say I get a compressor. Do I simply plug the boost leak tester into it or what? I'm kind of confused on this whole boost leak testing method:coy:

You remove the intake on your turbo. Then place the boost leak tester where the intake would go and tighten down the clamps on the rubber coupling. Then you set the regulator on the compressor to what psi you want( I recommend atleast 25 but thats me). Then just plug it in and listen for leaks.

EDIT: Send me a PM with your email address if you need more help. If I get a chance this weekend Ill take pics of my tester and how to use it. Its really not that hard once you visualize the concept.
