Well the time and money has come for me to do the needed required maintenance on my beloved Talon (and a few fun things as well). As this is a required item and not really performance, quality and cheap are more my goals for this fun project.

I've been scoping out parts for the maintenance and most reviews I've found are a few years old.

Besides the BSE and actual timing belt I've been looking at getting the water pump, oil pump (comes with new front case and gaskets), and the idler and tensioner pulleys from Partsdinosaur.com

I have no idea the actual mileage on the engine it could be the original (121k) or a swap with a million miles. I will never know but would feel better to replace what I can while in there. As of now there is no problem with the oil pump but if I'll be opening it up for a BSE minus well replace everything I can.

Partsdinosaur has an oil pump and front case for $149 (4G63 4G63T G4CR New Oil Pump Assembly) which looks okie from my inexperienced eyes.

I don't trust the looks of the BSE on their site as I've read that a part needs a grove for an oil passage and it appears that the parts don't have the grove and the instructions say to block off both oil passages in the block. I'll just get one from a vendor for the BSE.

If I can't find the Gates belt else where for cheaper I'll be getting it from PD as well. But the search is still on going for me. If anyone has some insight on where to get decently priced quality parts for my fun times ahead would you mind dropping a line here on where to look.

So long post short.

-If cracking the front case for the BSE and having no problems with oil pressure or oil pump should I just replace the seal with a new one and leave the oil pump?
-Suggestions of cheaper Timing belt kits? Current price is $124 through PD with pulleys, PCI t-belt, water pump
-Online site for OEM tensioner?
-Best place to get a quality BSE kit?
-Is it true PCI t-belt is a Gates belt under a different name?
-Any other pointers, tips, hints, or insight on where to go to get parts related to this post in any way?

Mean while I'll still be searching and searching and searching for all the opinions I can find current or old on a good consensus of where to go.

Thanks in advance for any input and help you fellow dsm'ers can share

P.S.

While in there be doing any and all maintenance I can do replacing hoses, belts, hardware, fluids.

Upgrades will be:

New Koni Yellow struts OR KYB AGX's depending on budget of other items. DSMLink Lite. Wideband o2 sensor. Factory Big Brake Upgrade with drilled rotors and ceramic pads. New 17" rubber for the 17" factory Eagle rims. Rebuilding rear calipers with new drilled rotor and ceramic pads. 3g lifters. VRSF FMIC set up. Possible GM maf in blow through set up. 560cc or higher injectors. Oil Pressure gauge.

Well if your on a budget, my advice would be dont skimp on the oil pump/front case get oem and get a oem t-belt tensioner, also dont skimp on the bsek either, get the oem kit that extremepsi puts together its all oem. (Dont get aftermarket bsek's, the block off plugs for the front case are usually metal that dont seal well and the stubby shafts dont have the oil passage hole like the oem ones have) and for the t-belt, idler pully, tensioner pully and water pump get gates products if you can. Hope i could help a little. -jeff-

On the end of the motor's block, right above the bell housing and left of the small freeze plug, is a smooth surface where the vehicle's VIN is stamped on this surface.

This is the block's ID number.

If the numbers match with the chassis VIN, motor belongs with the chassis.

If not, a motor swapout was done.

Awesome info 1gdsm I didn't know that info. I'll look when I get a chance.

901gtsi haha I'm getting from your post that you prefer OEM for everything. From my searches I've found that some of the parts are cheaper to source out through other vendors besides the dealer. Same manufacture of the parts but stamped with a different name. The oil pump and front case have no issues so leaning toward just pulling inspecting and if looks good reselling with new gasket. Tensioner of course is something I said I was going OEM on. But was curious of a vendor that bought in bulk and shared the savings. Unlike the dealer.

Tensioner for me oem, and oil pump, and pulleys everything else wasnt oem no problems on that setup with many cars and over 10 years using mix and match parts.

When it comes to an affordable, yet proven good quality timing belt kit, you can't go wrong with Gates. Oreilly auto parts offers these kits which includes all the pulleys and belts for a tad over $100. I run Gates components on my stock 4g64 and heavily modded 4g63t with zero issues. But for everything else, I don't trust anything but genuine Mitsubishi parts. Especially the stubby shaft used for a BSE. Many cheaper versions do not have an oil groove on the stubby which will lead to oil pump failure and possibly engine failure as a result. Not worth the $10-20 you save by going cheap. Street Tuned Motorsports has a great OEM section for our cars so definitely give their site a visit.

Also, have you verified whether your have a 6-bolt or 7-bolt engine?

I second the gates t-belt, idler pulley, and tensioner pully. I have them and work like a charm :D
