Way to test if speakers are bad?

Previous owner of my car was a complete idiot. He cut and spliced the adapter harness he installed for the cd player (why he cut and spliced it I have no idea) and didn't even bother to use electrical tape or ANYTHING. Just left the wires bare and had some bigger fuses installed in the car. Blew my gauge cluster lights, dimmer switch, alarm was jacked up, and thought he ruined the cd player as well. I soldered and used heat shrink and got the cd player working but no sound at all. I recently threw in another cd player and it made one small pop sound out of one of the rear speakers so I thought it was about to play some sound but nothing. So guessing it wasn't the cd player. Dunno but is it possible to blow speakers if all the wires were bare??? Wanting to test them from the cd player to the speakers to make sure nothing in the harness is screwed but dunno how. Thanks for any help. I'm not an audio expert but not a dumbass either.

You can test them by directly connecting them to the cd player. just pull the cd player out and make sure all the connections are correct and pull the speakers and connect the wires drectly to the spaeker. Really it's just shortcutting the harness. Here's a link to the wiring colors:

This way you can make sure there correct. Most people cut the harness because they are to cheap to buy a $20 harness to get it done right. (your prob gonna find alot of shortcuts done to your ride now) Your cd player wireswill belabeled and just match them to the colors... easy stuff bro. Good luck!

First do a continuity test on all the speaker wires. If the test comes out good on all wires, hook up a known good speaker. If you had the infinity system from the factory, theres a stock amp under the passenger seat that could be the problem.

No, I have a 2g. 1g in the avatar is just my last ride is all. I have a 98 GS-T now. I didn't think about the amp part of it. Is there a way to test that? This moron bought the adapter. And that's what he cut. Dunno why, but at least he didn't cut the stock harness. I'll do the continuity test and see what comes of that. But any ideas on checking the amp? Thanks.

Alittle trick I've used to check speakers, and see which one is which (left, right, rear, front) and will also tell you if they work is to take a AA or AAA battery and touch one wire on + and one -. It will hum at a certain frequency. It works in a pinch. As far as checking the amp, I would say see if the power light is on (if it has one) and go from there. I'm not sure how the factory sound is set up, but it's probably re-wired all to hell now, so you are better off starting from scratch and re-wiring the whole set-up. Does it use RCA's for "line in" or is it "lined-in" from the speaker wires themselves? I'm very good at hooking up systems, so if you get some more info on it and still need help, shoot me a PM.

Okay so something odd happened. I unbolted the seat and was looking over the amp. Couldn't see any lights that'd come on so I unplugged the white harness (the one with about 20 or so wires?) to check for power. I left the black cable hooked up. So I turn the key on to check the harness for power and the speakers had sound. I'm like, wtf??? Why would I get sound with the harness unplugged from the amp, but not with it plugged in??? Hmmm....

Anyway, all the speakers work except for the right front.

Does your DASH speakers work when you removed the stock amp harness?

What "harness" did he buy for the new deck, if he got the MITAH adapter that puts the stock amp in play, BUT also wired the output wires on the deck, then that maybe the problem. You are having the stock amp and the new deck both trying to ouput to the speakers. The 2g is wired parallel.

if thats the case, it makes sense on why a lot of stuff on your car got F-ed up.

I know the 2g wiring scheme pretty well, above that i mentioned seems like what he did or somewhere along those lines.

I'll test the one speaker that's not working when I get the chance. They're aftermarket speakers though. Pioneer I think. Dunno about the dash speakers. Just know that the rear speakers and the driver's door speaker works. Have no clue of the brand of harness he bought. It just hooks up to the stock harness and then to the back of the cd player. Of course I had to solder all the wires properly.

Not real sure whatcha mean about having both the deck and the amp trying to output to the speakers. How would I know if this were the case? When I originally pulled the deck and saw all the twisted bare wires, there was a rat's nest of speaker wire behind there. I yanked all that out and followed a HUGE rat's nest of wires that was laying under the rear seat. Threw it all in the garbage. All I see behind the deck now is the stock harness to the adapter harness, to the deck. Nothing else.

The speakers sound pretty good without the amp (if the amp isn't being used anyway. Not sure since the black cable is still hooked up to it). Can only imagine if it gets replaced with one that works....if it's bad that is.

Well if the guy before you had them all bare its possible that when you fixed them you crossed some wires. What I would recomend you do is just rerun the speaker cable. Run the wires from the place where your cd player is through your dash and into your door pannel. Its time consuming but if you do it all right it will completly bypass the stock wiring for the speakers. If you want to just test the speakers take them out of your car and hook them up to a house stero and see if they produce sound.

The only time they will be ouputting at the same time is if he got the MITAH adapter, its a proprietary din cable that adapts to your new deck's rca output cables. if he got that type of cable, plus you or him wired the speaker output of the new deck with the leads on the wiring harness for the car, that will do that.

You proboblly dont have blown speakers you could always just take them out and put in some JBL P550 5 1/4's in there < i love mine so loud makes ya def after about 15 mins

Well, since they're sounding pretty good, I'm kinda doubting that they're blown. Lol. Although I do need to check on the one speaker. But at the moment I have more important issues to resolve, like getting the clutch replaced when the parts come in. I'm not too concerned anymore about if the amp works or not cause it sure sounds pretty good, so guessing it is.
