There is no clip on the driverside axle. It should still seat in there firmly.

The seal rides on the smooth silver part of the axle shaft, if it is grooved or the seal is damaged it will leak from there.

Check the transmission bolts for tightness too, like codyw suggested. Quick and easy. I've seen the bolts come loose myself, but would expect clutch engagement problems to go along with this.
