What is too small would be relative, but IMHO if you have to run a gap ~0.024" or smaller, it is probably time for a stronger ignition. Thats just my opinion, though.

Don't forget that we do have a couple bolt-on coil pack "upgrades" available; MSD's 36,000V coil pack #MSD-8229, and the Screamin' Demon 40,000V coil pack #31732. Both appear to have longevity issues, though.

But I completely agree with you, he should be fine with the stock ignition system.
