I have a dead auto trans in my 91 auto awd turbo. At least think its dead. No forward or reverse motion at all. Fluid is up .Car seems to clunk like going into gear but no movement.

Anyway what years are swappable..will a 90 fit, 92,93,94? are the 2g autos different?
What about 90 ,91,92,93 ,94 front wheel drive cars. Will they work. Wrecker has one from 91 with low mileage but he wants like 900 US for it. seems high 40,000 original miles and guaranteed for 90 days though.

THe tcu soloniods are where the difference is. 90 through early 92' use 3 ohm solnoids and late 92 on use 13 ohm solnoids in the tranny so you will need the tcu for whatever tranny you are going to use unless of course you find a 90 through early 92 trans. Also the late 92 on tcu's use different plugs then the early tcus. And $900 for a 40k mile awd trans isn't that bad of a deal and it is a straight drop in for you. I'd say go for that one because it will say you alot of headaches down the road trust me I have been through them with swapping trans in my a/t car.

I have a few similar questions.

Will the automatic transmission from a fwd turbo 1g work in a fwd non-turbo 1g?
Are the TCU solenoids, etc. the same for turbo and non turbos?
I might as well forget about using an AWD transmission, right?
Are 1.8 and 2.0 automatic transmissions the same?

Basically, I'm trying to find an automatic transmission for a 93 non-turbo and I need to know what transmissions will work in it.

Thanks in advance.

WatchItExplode You'll need a trans from a late 92 to 94 car. I do believe the 1.8 and 2.0 n/t trans are the same. The turbo tranny will bolt up you just need a different flex plat as the n/t has a 3 bolt tq converter while the turbo trans has a 4 bolt tq conv. The tcu is different so you will need that also.

would it be possible to use 93 auto trans in a early 92 if the solenoids were switched, if that is even possible. Or is there a way to to use the 93 tcu in the 92 despite the different harness. Say either switch the harness or an adapter. I have the 93 trans and tcu because I thought it was a late 92 so any help would be appreciated.

the car is a early 92 tsi awd
