My 92 Eclipse has a 90 throttle body on it. I'm not suer why, but it does.

I recently performed a boost leak test, and I found that I had a big boost leak at my throttle body shaft seals. What I want to know is what I should do.

My options are to either:

-Find some shaft seals for a 90 throttle body
-Buy a 91-94 throttle body. (Or even another 90 TB that works)

http://ca.dsm.org/FAQ/tb-shaftseals.html

Shaft seals for a 90 seem to be pretty rare, and a hassle to install.

Throttle bodies from a dealer are $800 (and that's with a 20% discount!!!!!
:notgood: )

I'm leaning towards the first option, and replacing the shaft seals. I would buy another TB, but I don't want to have to look around for someone parting out their DSM.

What would you do?

Does the bore diameter of the T/B match the intake? The 1G T/B and intake manifolds were huge compared to 2G. If there is a big step down to the intake then you have the 1G T/B fitted to a 2G manifold which unless someone has ported it will be sharp step of about 25% smaller and not smart.

If you decide to make repairs a good battery drill with adjustable clutch will give you a bit of a hammer drill action which will help removing the plate screws. You want the best screwdriver bit you can find that fits. In the URL the guy is really leaning into that screwdriver, if he slips there will be some nasty gouges to sand out. Set the clutch 1/2 way and see if that will break them loose and just keep incrimenting it till they do.

Couple things not mentioned on reassembly, you can cut small strips of paper and place them on the sides near the shaft bores. You can hold them in place with masking tape but you can then pull the strips of paper to see if you have the same drag on each side. This will help in centering the plate in the bore.

You don't want the throttle plate slamming shut and either damaging the plate or making a ridge in the bore from wear. Before you take things apart, put a flashlight behind the T/B and look for light leak, best done in a dark room. You can use a small piece of audio recording tape and feel the drag as you open and close the throttle plate and try to pull the tape out. You should be able to pull the tape out and yet have no light leaks when adjusting the throttle stop screw.

Cheers,
GTM
