Anyone else using this in your tranny? What are your thoughts on it?

I just started using it and so far I'm not very impressed. I get a lot of gear grinding whether the car is cold or not.

since 30W oil is much thinner than 75W (which is recommended) yes it will shift better.. well until the syncros / bearings fail and.. well.. then it won't

Also note that motor oil is loaded with additives that are specific to a valvetrain and is designed to be replaced ar regular intervals.

My advice is to stick with what's known to work.. BG / Redline MTL / Syncromesh and/or a Shep-built tranny like mine :thumb:

I used 30w motor oil in my tranny once. This was for a specific purpose, so I don't recomend anyone else try it unless you're having the same problem.

I did it to flush out some excess metal shavings in the trans. Basically I got the cheapest 30w oil, put it in the trans and drove gently for a week, then drained out sparkling metal filled oil. The trans seemed to shift about as good with 30w as it did with the fancy tranny oils, but I'm sure it doesn't have the same load bearing capacity. Now I'm back to my current favorite; 50/50 mix of NEO RHD and Redline MTL.

30w oil in a transmission that calls for 85w-90? God, no. I bet your friends would run below 0 viscosity oil in their engine if it existed.

Honda transmissions won't work with any type of gear lube in them. Most every honda 5 speed calls for 10W30 motor oil.

I helped a friend work on his, and I told him to change his fluid and throw some syncrhomesh in there. He filled the whole tranny with synchromesh and he made me put his new tranny in a few weeks later. OMG

Hondas ain't DSMs, and DSMs ain't Hondas. Most Japanese motorcycles also use motor oil for transmission lubrication. Mitsubishi didn't make any motorcycles.

I'm at the point when I need to change my tranny fluid. I had a question. From what I understand, once you go with synthetic oil you should stick with it, right? (at least with engines, anyway). Anyway, I had Redline MTL filled in my tranny after a clutch change and it seems to be ok but I don't really like Redline products. I read this post and saw that Pennzoil was pretty popular...I thought Pennzoil was crappy (or is that just their motor oil?) Before I pickup some of this (Pennzoil), should I re-consider and just get some synthetic BG-II, BG-I, or Royal Purple Synchromax instead?

I'm not sure the guidance about sticking with syn applies as much to the drivetrain as it does to the engine, but on the other hand, with a high performance car it's probably worthwhile to stick with the better product. I've run Redline in several vehicles and had no problems, but when I did the most recent fluid switch I went to Pennzoil synchromesh after reading all through here and the FAQs and such-it seems to have the best reputation. Fundamentally it shouldn't make too much of a difference, so long as you take the synchros needing the proper type of lubricant into account (i.e. standard gear oils will cause wear due to metal type.)

One other reason I went with it is locally all I can find in any of the autostores from Redline is Waterwetter, so even though they carry it, the clearly don't actually carry the product line. Synchromesh is essentially the same in several brand names from what I remember from my research, i.e. brands Quaker State and Pennzoil have nearly the same properties and can be substituted for each other as equivalents. A quick search should illustrate which one's that applies to-I'd stick with the major brands or the high end stuff like you're talking about.

Not recommended, at least that is everything I have read and seen on some other threads.

Just run the coarse and stay with what it known to be good stuff

If you're having transmission issues, no bottle of anything is going to correct it. If you want smoother shifting, and your trouble isn't a used-up gearbox, you may find some improvement with a different lubricant, or you might just think you do.
I've had great luck with Pennzoil Synchromesh, for 60,000 miles. Maybe I should change it out some day with some fresh.
Others down-talk it.
Make sure the Lucas is compatible with the synchro material of the DSM gearbox. Check their site and email them. All the aftermarket, small-time outfits are happy to communicate with their customers.

I read an article about Lucas Oil Stabilizer foaming in the engine, I wouldn't trust it in a transmission.

I'm with Defiant, I've used Pennzoil Synchromesh for about 10k and I have had no issues with it.

BG Synchro shift II synthetic is good. But consider this. Use the manual tranny fluid from the mitsu dealer and change it regularly and I've found that to be the best.

Synthetic tranny fluid is pricey. Same goes for engine oil.

I use valvoline oil and change it about every 3,000 miles or less. But I own a shop so it's pretty easy to change tranny fluid etc when you got a hoist.

My tranny is lying on the workbench right now, waiting for the bearings to pressed on.

Not sure if this is the problem. Before I had my shop open, a buddy had the car at his house - last june of 06 because the balance shaft bearings spun. So I did a complete lower end build - ya know the usual stuff. But he put the tranny fluid (BG Synchro) in the transfer case and are you ready?......in the tranny he put in REDLINE LIGHTWEIGHT SHOCKPROOF GEAR LUBE.

A year later 2nd gear grinds. Tear it down and low and behold the bearings are cashed.

So, actually my previous post is my new policy.

Upside - got a OEM stage 2 coming from shepard racing.
