1G 1G Dual Piston Big Brake Upgrade

Has anyone on here upgraded their 90-92 TEL front brakes to the 94+ big brakes? If so how much did the used calipers and brackets cost? Did it make a big difference in stopping power?

I've done it on my car, and noticed a slightly better pedal feel. No warping now. I'm pretty sure the calipers cost me about $100 with brackets - they came off a Dodge Stealth N/T.

Thanks for the reply. I will most likely do the upgrade in the next few months. I was going to just replace the rotors, but for the price of the upgrade, you cant beat that.

I got the parts used from a 92 Diamonte for $100 (rotors, calipers, and mounting brackets) I was quite pleased with the results, I would say the car feels A LOT better under braking now. It actually feels like the car will stop now, and it does. Before the brakes wouldn't lock up my old worn all season tires, now they will lock up my new summer only AVS intermediates. I would highly recommend doing the upgrade.

My brakes won't lock up either. They take some more pressure than i'm used to to get the car to stop. I've checked the pads and theyre fine, and the rotors are in decent condition. Is this just a normal thing with 90-92 DSMs?

Yes that is normal for the 1 piston caliper brakes, the stock brakes are just horribly undersized. Get rid of them as soon as possible!!

Is there a page that goes through the steps involved for the brake upgrade? I cant find one here or at dsm.org. Will brakes off the Stealth or Diamante fit right in without trouble?

I just completed the big brake 93-94 AWD upgrade on my 1990 Laser RS this morning. I have not had the chance to test them yet, I need to break them in first. I got my calipers from discbrakesrus.com for around 95 dollars for the set brand new, and the rotors were like $35 a piece, the total shipped was $220. Can't beat that.

So far I have noticed the pedal is a little mushy, most likey due to the ancient brake lines. I would suggest replacing this at the same time ( they do suggest this as well in the VFAQ on this topic).

One other thing of note: the bigger brakes fit under the stock steel wheels. I was a little worried they would not. New wheels and tires are coming soon.

Oh yeah, the calipers from discbrakesrus come with pads and brakets too, so everything you need can be had for the above price. I did notice that the calipers were very heavy, I am sure afternarket upgrades are lighter, but much more expensive.
