After always being directed here over the years when I google a question, I figured it was googles way of telling me to register on the site. Not sure if the owners of the site pay off google to have all dsm related questions directed here or what. either way here I am saying hello.

Some background info, I own a 98 eclipse gs 5spd. its not my first dsm as a long time ago I owned a 1st gen talon tsi I got for 200 bucks with the upper half of the engine in a box in the trunk. a few trips the scrapyard and auto part store and it was running good as new. I also owned an 86 Mitsubishi starion flatbody. would love to own another but they are getting hard to find. I make my living as an auto tech. been in the field since the day I turned 18 and I am 30 now. I use to work at a dodge dealer as a tech before getting laid off and them closing there doors.

My car is currently in pieces at my work. I decided to fix the infamous 420a oil leak from the head gasket. since the car has 225k miles on it I also decided to freshen up the bottom end with new bearings and rings. I was quite surprised how the inside of the engine looked after 225k. the bearings looked good and the machine shop said the head was in pretty good shape. the timing belt was pretty bad though. when I first bought the car, I popped the inspection cover off and saw it had been replaced before, but I didn't know when. well when I tore it down I found the timing was off a tooth. the belt had been rubbing against the oil pump and even knocked this ring off the back side of the water pump pulley which was causing the faint ringing sound I heard from time to time. then took the belt off and discovered the tensioner pulley was binding up. holding the belt in my hand I could peel the teeth off with my fingers. I am surprised it never broke. also the hydraulic tensioner was seized, so when it all goes back together next week, I am trying out the mechanical tensioner instead.

so that's what I am dealing with.
