I installed a new turbo on Saturday (ebay E316G) and ever since I have had this ridiculous high pitched whine/whistle as the turbo spools. It starts at about 2500rpm and continues into the upper rpm's and then back down to a smaller degree. I removed the intake pipe and wrapped layers of duct tape around the outlet pipe coupling (quick and dirty) andconfirmed that the sound is coming from the turbo or it's very general area. Am I just fighting a persistent boost leak that I can't find or is there worse news on it's way?

There was no noise present before the turbo install and the only other intake item that is different is the filter, removed it and the noise persists. The turbo has zero shaft play and the inlet of the housing doesn't show any signs of the blades rubbing, that being said, the turbo only has 35-40 miles on it so I don't know if blade rubbing would be apparent yet.

Anyways... Here's a link to a video I just shot. The noise I'm talking about is obvious. Please let me know what you guys think and if you have any ideas I haven't explored. Thanks in advance for any and all help I may recieve.

I wouldnt be so sure its your turbo. I used to have that noise and it turned out to be a leak in my throttle body area.

Thanks for the replies.

It doesn't really make the sound in vacuum only when the pressure starts to go poitive. I have considered, tested for and fixed the leaks I could find; however, it didn't make the noise until I put on the new turbo, which is why I started there. Also, the noise definately sounds like it's coming from near or at the turbo.

J-pipe flange is a definate possibility. I had to swap it over when I did the install. I used a new gasket and torqued it properly but the turbo and/or j-pipe flanges may not be true.

Your turbo is new and everything. But give this thread a shot. Did you drive around? Builds boost just fine?
They talk about J-pipe not lining up correctly in this thread as well. So that might be your problem

Thanks for the link. Pretty sure the WGA is fine. I can build boost no problem, albeit a little slowly, which I attribute to running with no MAF and being in default mode. (see pig fu(king rich) I'm going to check the flanges tomorrow and see if I can find any leaks in the area.

Holy crap thanks to this thread you helped me solve my worry. I thought my t25 was going bad :D. DSM Tuners helps me again
We're talking about a new 16G here....your T25 is probably junk. ROFL

I understand that and I'm working towards an e3 16g. But his not only does his sound exactly like mine but right when I start making positive pressure LOL. I still need to do my BLT soon.

RESOLVED.

jusmx141 nailed it. 2 sheets of paper wide leak between the flanges for the j-pipe/turbo. Thanks everyone for the help, it is much appreciated. Mods, can you please mark this thread as resolved.

Glad you got it fixed! You can mark the thread resolved yourself. Just click Thread Tools at the top of the thread and select Mark Thread Solved. :thumb:

I see this problem a lot. The flanges on the eBay j-pipes can warp from the tig welding, and even a stock j-pipe can warp slightly from years of use.

ALWAYS use a paper gasket on the j-pipe connection instead of one of those thin metal gaskets, and reinforce the paper gasket with a little RTV to guarantee a good seal. Notice I said a "little" RTV....don't cake the shit on there and make a gasket lasagna.

Glad it was something simple!

Or have your flanges lapped.
