I picked up this turbo for $75 and it needs rebuilt. The guy told me it is a pte 50 trim, but wich one? From the research I have done on google I think it is a PTE GT3251. Is that correct? I need to know were to get a rebuild kit and possibly a compressor wheel for it. The compressor rubbed the housing and has some burrs on it. Can that be repaired? The center section says JY1 1 on one side and 447534 on the other. The compressor is 2" on the inducer and 2.80" on the exducer. I also need to know what parts fit this turbo. thanks for any help!

It could be a GT3251 but the 447534 only designates the CHRA. You will want to call PTE on that one to double check. I would recommend having View Profile: jusmx141 - DSMtuners.com rebuild your turbo. He is a trusted member on here and does very good work.

Yea, I have been talking to him about the turbo and he said he would I.D. it for me. I just dont think he has been on yet since i posted this. Id like to rebuild it myself but depending on what he charges I might just see if he will do it for me.

Definitely a PTE GT3251E.

That turbo does not use a standard T3 rebuild kit- it's parts kit it similar to the kit for a 99-02 7.3 Powerstroke turbo, but the 'Stroker turbo rotates the opposite direction. There are no 360* thrust plates available for this type of turbo. It's not very durable for a high-boost application, which is why it's design never really caught on.

The last one of these I rebuilt a few years ago; the parts kit alone cost $129 (although it was quite thorough) and the turbo developed in/out shaft play again just 2k miles after I rebuilt it showing a sign of a failed thrust plate (it appears yours has a similar thrust plate failure). The owner gave up and bought something more reliable.

If you decide to tackle the job yourself, the rebuild process is very similar to a standard T3 turbo except the compressor wheel has the locknut built into it instead of being a separate piece. This makes assembly a breeze because the wheel can only go on one way....there's no need to mark the shaft. Another difference is on the GT32 the backplate bolts are only accessible after the compressor wheel has been removed instead of outside the turbo like a T3.

So do you think this turbo is worth the time and money? When you say high boost, what do you consider high for this turbo? My plans were to run 20-25psi. Also, where can I find the rebuild kit for this turbo? Thanks!

But the GT3251 was a journal bearing turbo, and not part of the "R" series family. I used to run these on several cars (most outsid DSM) and used the -3AN line kits w/ no restrictor. For this series, it worked on Honda LS series up to 340whp, but it seems the DSM world didn't like them too much..

Restrictors aren't just for ball bearing turbos. If you feed this turbo from the filter housing with a -4AN line (as most of the marketed oil supply kits are these days), you will be giving it too much oil flow and pressure at wide open throttle.

A .075" restrictor would bring the flow down to an acceptable level, similar to what a -3AN line would provide.

Understood. Like I said, I use these on applications in addition to DSMs, and have only used the -3AN lines with much success. It's based on application oil pressure to determine whether or not a restrictor is used, not whether or not it is Strictly a ball-bearing cartridge. The way your statement was written, it seemed as though it were a general rule, and not specific to the size feed line used. As you well know, unfortunately, most people on these forums hear the word "RESTRICTOR" without taking into account what size is actually needed for the application.

Graham Crackers and Saltines are on completely different levels bro, I call BS on this trade!

Go for onion flavor saltines or chocolate graham crackers for a sweet deal...
Make sure its one of those gigantic sharpies, so you can write on the bus stop.

I'm glad I found this thread and read that it doesn't use a regular T3 rebuild kit.. cause I was about to bid on it on ebay and rebuild it if I won.
