Can I run just one spring in my Tial 38mm wastegate? I've got the big blue/small blue setup and want to remove the small blue since I have a boost controller now.

Yes, you can since the boost with 2 blue springs on Tial 38mm would be very high for pump gas. But from my experience I would recommend double spring, as close as you could be to your desired boost level. Right now I have big blue and small green springs, which on 44mm equals to 19psi and my boost responce it is almost instant. Before I had a single big Red, then after that two red springs, small and large and in both cases connected to MBC. It was still working OK, but you could hear how early the WG would open, especially with the single RED. It was open 3-4 psi earlier than my set boost at the moment. Even after that with two red springs was kind of the same. It was still opening a bit early, may be about 2psi. Now with 19 psi springs, I built more boost earlier and WG does not open until it hits 21-22 PSI, because it is still connected to MBC. In my opinion the stiffer the better, especially for pump gas boost.

Hmm. Good point. I was hoping to run a lower boost setting and turn it up if need be (I don't have enough self control to not go wot every once and a while) With the springs and the boost controller hooked up (and dialed all the way down) it gets up to 26psi. I'll experiment and see. I might just leave the dual springs in since I just moved to Colorado from California and won't have as much time to drive.

Now what's the trick to getting the top half of the wastegate back on? Vice clamp?

It is even better if you use two vice clamps. The top still moves if you need it, to align the holes. It is just pleasure to do it/BY YOURSELF. last time before I got the idea for the clamps, almost stripped two bolts.

If you can put a rag or have "smooth jaw" pliers then that will keep the teeth marks from messing up your pretty wg. I found that out the hard way...
