I have a problem with burning oil. It will make a nice sized cloud when in boost but no clouds when cruising. A few friends that were following me one day said it smoked really bad when I got on it but always smelt like burning oil. Is it for sure time for a new turbo? Forgot to mention, its going through about a quart of mobil1 every 1000 miles
 
Check for shaft play on the turbo. Take the intake off the inlet and grab the compressor wheel(the nut on the shart) and gently try to move it in and out and side to side. If the is a significant amount of move play then your turbo is shot. Now your gonns be askin how much is to much play. Put it this way, when you check for any play and you can notice it and then find your self wondering if thats too much, well you just answered you own question.
 
Ah yes, I forgot to mention I checked the turbo yesterday for shaft play... There was very little. It probably moved 1/32nd of an inch up and down and maybe 1/16th in and out. It did seem slightly hard to spin the turbine after checking but it has no problems at all boosting...
 
Well side to side is little more tolerable then in and out. And you said your in and out was twice as much as side to side. So i would check the housing to see if it looks like the wheel has been scraping it at all.

And it should be easy to spin by hand, not hard. Also it will boost easy casue think about the pressure you are using to spin the turbine. You can also check for any oil in your licp, which is a sign that oil is going past your bearings, which is also a good indiaction.
 
Alright I'll pull the LICP tonight and see what its looking like. Thanks for the insight!
