Hey guys, Just picked up a 97 GST
I've got a couple questions. I hope you can bear with me i've had 1 hours of sleep in the last two days because i had to road trip to this this car.

I have a couple quick question hopefully someone can answer.

I noticed the BOV isn't venting back into the intake. i'm switching to a Greaddy type RS should i vent this back into the engine? or is the engine setup for venting out into the open air, how can i verify?

Also the internal waste gate is the one thats hooked to the turbo right? i noticed the line is broke off of it i'm guessing it fell under the car. there isn't a external wastegate anywhere that i can see so i'm guessing this is a must to hook back up into vac line.

or does that stock manual boost controller under the hook control how much boost and not the waste gate? or do you hook the wastegate into the oem boost controler?

I know this are very stupid questions. Just trying to get some info for tonight when i go over the car and see whats what.

Thanks Guys.

Okay i think i may have answered my question on one
If the vac line is missing from the stock wastegate the turbo runs at max which will wreck it right?
if this is the case where to i hook it back into? just into a vac line on the intake manifold?

if you still have the 2G MAS right after the open air filter then you need to hook it back up.

either the wastegate or a MBC can control boost but if you dont have one you need to hook it up back to the boost solenoid which is under the intake and overflow bottle.

Is the MBC the deal thats under the hood drivers side tucked up in there little twist black deal with a twist knob?
if thats what it is theres one under there.

To recirculate i noticed after the filer looks like a capped off inlet on the pipe leading into the turbo is that where i recirculate it into? or does it need to recirculate back into the intercooler piping? Sorry for all these stupid questions.

Also this car could have a GM MAS i really have no idea can someone tell me how to see if it's stock or not?

if it doesn't the last owner was dumb and i have fixing to do to the poor thing.

After the air filter, you should have a large square plastic box. That's your MAS. If you have that, you don't have a GM MAF. If you don't have a GM MAF, you have to recirculate your BOV.

On the intake pipe, immediately after the MAS, on the upper side of the intake pipe, there should be a little "snorkel" tube. If that's the one you say is capped off, that's the recirculation tube. There should be a rubber tube leading from the BOV to that snorkel, held on by hose clamps. You can go to Home Depot or an auto parts store and try to find some rubber hose/radiator hose that's shaped well enough to fit between the BOV and intake pipe and begin recirculating again.

If you get the Greddy Type RS, you'll need a recirculation kit. This is available at some vendors.

Until you get an MBC, you can connect the nipple on the turbo compressor housing directly to the wastegate actuator nipple with a vacuum line and get some semblance of boost control.

Thanks for all the help guys i understand the BOV thing now

This pic is how it needs to be setup.

that boost controller thing has me confused still though i'll post pics of it tomorrow.

Wanna know how to hook up to that boost controller thats in the driver side corner bolted to the firewall. it looks oem. Guy i picked the car up said by turning that clockwise it adds more psi.
MBC looks cheap though might be less work to just buy one of those vs messing around with hooking it back up stock. trying to figure out why that hose if off.
Oh well saga goes on.

Thanks again guys i know these questions are really stupid.

Most people mount their MBC's close to the turbo to keep the vacuum lines shorter. Shorter vac lines=quicker response. Why someone would mount one on the firewall on the driver's side is beyond me.

Get us a pic of everything you have questions about.

Im pretty sure he is reffering to the stock fuel regulator. Is the part you are talking about plastic and black and mounted sideways? If so thats the fuel regualtor and not a MBC.

thats it stock fuel regulator it's mounted sideways the part you turn is facing the outside of the car drivers side. so running parallel to the firewall
wow this guy was dumb i got this car from then.
How do i know if he didn't screw this thing all up?
it there like a factory setting for it? like tight it one way then back it off 3 turns?

guessing it's okay but after hearing it's not a boost controller i don't want to take

Tonight i'm going to go over it and anything i have questions on i'm going to try to take pics of so it's easy to understand.

Thanks again guys.
This weekend the car gets a head gasket and after i fix all these boost problems hopefully it's ready to drive.
I hope the turbo isn't messed up. from that wastegate crap. I guess if it is i'll have to take the Hahn turbo i was going to use for my 420A which looks larger then the stock one anyways.

The fuel pressure regulator is mounted on the drivers side end of the fuel rail, not on the firewall.

The black thing on the firewall is a fuel pressure solenoid and as far as I know it has no real purpose. Mine has been unplugged since I installed my AFPR without problems and I have been told that as long as it stays connected to the attached wire clip you won't throw a code; some people have removed them entirely without incidence.

As for the black cap on the side, it is simply that; a cap. Turning it either way does not adjust anything. If you pull on it (towards the driver side fender) it will come off revealing another nipple for a vacuum line.

Hope this clears things up.

I don't recommend the first one you linked to, for several reasons:
-The majority of "How do I hook up this MBC" and "My new MBC doesn't work right" threads are about that specific (or knock-off) MBC.
-It advocates tapping the BOV line with that directional tee to control boost. Tapping the BOV line has been found to produce several unwanted side effects, including affecting the opening and closing of the BOV, reducing the effectiveness of the boost controller, and reducing the response time of the MBC.

The Voodoo one you linked to seems to be your standard Home Depot-style ball and spring boost controller, albeit powdercoated to your liking. A Hallman MBC is only $55 on ebay and is generally more accepted as reputable and reliable by most DSM'ers.

Thanks Mr Broxx I just ordered a Hallman.
I was kinda confused why people tap the BOV line for the MBC instead of just putting it on it's on own.
Guess there are only so many vac lines to go around,
Thanks guys.
Also ordered an Air/Fuel gauge Boost gauge a pillar.

I have a 27X6X2.6 FMIC i was going to use on my 420A.
How much of a performance jump will i see with this larger intercooler at 15psi vs just the old SMIC thats got it's fare share of rock dents in it.

Can someone explain to me how to install and where a GM MAF sits vs the stock one where i need a recirculation kit where my BOV flange sits it's going to be hard as heck to get a tube into the intake again.
unless i do something like have the BOV fav the firewall and loop the tube over the top of it and back in.
But i can't find a recirculation kit for a greaddy thats not sold with a BOV.

How much is a GM MAF maybe i should just upgrade to one.

Also does it hard the engine to Blow without the GM or just runs the motor rich and it runs like crap?

See where there's a silver and black sandwich in the intercooler pipes up near the TB? That's where a GM MAF usually goes.

SBR has a MAF Translator for $195, then the cost of a GM MAF could run you anwhere from $35 from a salvage yard to $160 online. Then you've got to modify your aftermarket intercooler pipes or buy new ones specifially to fit a GM MAF. The complete kit at SBR is $400.

Does it hurt the engine to vent the BOV to atmosphere without a blow-through setup? Not really. But you're definitely not gaining anything from it. You'll run rich and may run into some other little problems.
