Finally getting around to porting my 14b and putting on my 2G exhaust manifold. Got a few questions.

1.) After taking the turbo off and apart I found that their are two cracks where the wastegate flapper sits. I assume this is common and ok, but still would like some input/info. here are some pictures of the cracks.

2.) I have a 1600 degree autometer EGT gauge and after doing some research, I plan on putting the probe in my 02 housing just for the fact that my gauge only goes to 1600 degrees. I was thinking of putting it about an inch away from the o2 sensor itself, directly downstream, their by, not blocking any air flow. Any possible problems with doing this?

3.)I have never installed a turbo before, is their anything I should know? Do i need to pre-oil it or just prime it somehow after its installed?

4.) what do you think of my first port & polish job on my 2G manifold? I matched it to a 7cm gasket.

Those cracks are normal and don't look to bad.

The EGT should be fine there.

After you put the turbo on, pull the MPI fuse and crank the car over a few times for 10 seconds to build oil pressure.

That port job looks great!

Did you port the turbine housing to 7cm also?

thanks for the reply.

Not yet, doing that and the wastegate flapper tomorrow or as soon as I have time.

The port/polish job looks great! How long do you think that took you to do? I'm considering porting mine soon.

When I first installed my EGT, I made the mistake of buying the 0-1600 and tapping into the mani about 5 inches from the flange. I drive around at 1300-1450 normally and have come close to maxing out the gauge a couple times after some hard driving. If I really drive it easy, temps usually hang around 1100-1250. I only run 15-16psi, at stock pig-rich AFR's on the stock fuel system, but I really only see anything above 1500 if I keep it pegged to 16psi. You shouldn't be able to max the gauge out when tapping into the O2 housing unless you run pretty lean, in which case you'd want to change things anyway.

I put about 3-4 hours in porting and polishing the manifold. I'll probably have another 3-4 in the turbo inlet, wastegate flapper, and a little more on the 02 housing. Thanks for the info about your EGT's. I'm still not really sure what to expect.

EGT isn't worth it, Go with a wide band o2, tuning by knock and egt is old school, now days people tune with a/f ratio. If your car starts to do something funny the a/f ratio is whats goin to change and you will see that before the car even heats up. Like if you car starts to lean out your wide band will start to creep then the egt will start to go up. Its the only gauge I pay attention to in my car and it tells me exactly how my car is running all the time.

Just my .02

I'm not planning to tune with it, it will mainly be for monitoring. I appricate your input but thiers no need to :beatentodeath: over the EGT topic. I have one and I'll be installing it, end of story.

My hand were starting to cramp up so i'm not quite done yet. just need to smooth out the turbo inlet a little more, make it a little more uniform, and then polish it.

You can compare how far the wastegate flapper opens in this picture to the first one I posted. The first picture i took was also at an angle so you could see the cracks better.(Which makes it look like it open further than it would of looked from a straight up shot)

I see some imperfection on the flanges, unless you're having them resurfaced, I suggest using copper spray to help with sealing.

The WG flapper will never open more then about 45* if even that so there is no real point in back cutting behind the arm.

Take breaks and strech your hands every 30 mins or so or you will regret it later.

What kind of equipment did you use?(die grinder, which specific bits, etc)
just a normal die grinder with basically 4 differnt bits. 2 longer bits about 6" and 2 short one about 2" long. I dont have the exacts on the bits but if you really want them i can probably get them for you.

Thanks for the tip. I resurfaced them and they needed it.

What kind of air compressor do you have?

Well here are the final pics.
