Edmonton,
I'm debating on running one of 2 used turbos.

A used Evo3 16g vs a used Slowboy Big 16g

My setup:
- FMIC
- 550cc injectors
- Walbro 190 re-wired
- SAFC 1
- MBC
- Act 2100 clutch
- 3" catback exhaust, hi-flow cat
- Pocketlogger

My goal is to hit 300fwhp. I definitely want it to be very streetable, hitting 20psi by 3500rpm would be nice. I don't know much about the Slowboy Big 16g that is being sold by this guy in my city, but it has an Air Research compressor housing, my guess was T04E.

Any input? I know most of the pros to the evo3 16g but I haven't found much info on this SBR Big 16g.

When you say SBR big 16g what exactly do you mean? If it is the one I think you are talking about by the air research housing, it should have a elbow one it much like the T-28 for the 2g's. As far as performance goes they are both well performing turbos. However the Evo III will outflow the big 16g.

The elbow can be cut off making it usable for a 1g.

I think he just meant that it's a b16G that was bought from SBR . either way, either turbo will get you to your goal. The question isn't which turbo to choose, but which turbo is in better condition???

Jon Nye, this is probably word of mouth, so I'd rather hear this from you. I've heard and read about AirResearch and in the back of my mind I recall it being a bad thing. Could you clarify a little about the AirResearch comp cover. All 16G variant's I have ever seen came with the td05h comp cover. Unless this is the SBR 2g 16G??? I faintly remember you guys selling a 16G that was "bolt on" to a 2g DSM... is this the one you are referring to???

Yes, I agree that condition should be the deciding factor in this choice. Yes, we were selling 2g 16g's with the Air Research housings. This was a bolt on. Performance wise it was very similar to the standard big 16g's.

I am sure the next question will be "If it was a good turbo, why did you stop selling it?" The answer to this is we decided to stop doing business with the supplier of this turbo who will remain nameless. Oh, and to answer your other question it was a TD05.

Thanks for that info! One thing I noticed about the slowboy big 16g was the turbo outlet is facing the wrong way for my intercooler piping setup. Although I will continue to support Slowboy in other purchases, I'm going to go for a used or refirbished EVO3 16g. :thumb:

Cool deal! Good luck. :thumb:

i have your exact setup except i have a ported big 16g from turbochargers.com and a test pipe instead of a high flow cat. i went on the dyno last weekend and put down 283whp/292tq on 20psi with what i later found to be a very decent boost leak. i'm getting that fixed as we speak and will be back on the dyno soon. i'm definitely going to hit 300+ this next time around. i'll post back up when i get some new numbers...good luck with it all
