Mitsu hybrids, could this be the next one?

toronto,
OK we the dsm community have a few turbos that are stock appearing (mitsu carts) the bastard 20g and the fp sleeper 16g and a bunch of 18g turbos.

I think that if either of these turbos where to be used say in conjunction with a stroker motor that a nice overall combination could be had.

But then I started to ponder and imagine. The only reason you would use either of these turbos on any engine let alone a stroker would be to have a sleeper look, if you didn't care about the sleeper look then you could just as easily go with a 50 trim or a 60-1.

I started to think to myself the only down fall with some of these "sleeper turbos" was their spool up characteristics. So I got an idea to stuff the fastest spooling cartridge with a very respectable wheel size in to a customized evo3 cartridge.

Unfortunately do to my new career as a fighter and the expenses I have had to endure, I have had to postpone the extruded honing of my evo 3 turbine/compressor housings.

But I look at this as an opportunity to create something that hasn't been (at least to my knowledge) created be-for.

We basically take the evo 6.5 rs turbo and swap covers with the extruded honed evo3 16g housings.

It can be done because the 6.5 uses td05hra wheels. With a lighter and faster rotating Assembly coupled with some really smooth housings this turbo could be an ultimate sleeper.

Now fp sells the evo 6.5rs turbo for $1,249.00, hopefully I could find a better deal somewhere else but this is something I wouldn't mind getting my hands around.

I'll talk to some of my more tech savvy friends about it tomorrow and make a few calls.
I'll keep you guys posted if anything does transpier in the next few months , but I just wanted some constructive thoughts when speaking about this type of mitsu hybrid.

The only thing discouraging me is the bloody price tag.

The other problem is that the Evo 4 through 8 turbos spin in the wrong direction to use with the Evo III housings. OMG Wouldn't work at all.

^ Who was the guy who installed a complete evo8 turbo setup on his 1G, and made like 350whp and ran 11's? I know it's been done because I saw the pics, but I'm trying to remember who did it.

You are absolutely right ,after reviewing both o2 housing views of the turbine housings the exducer fins are actually facing a different angle.

Aside from changing the exducer wheel of the turbo nothing else could be done in retro spec to using the evo housings. Why in the end would you change the exducer wheel on the 6.5 rs when the only real reason we want it is because the entire wheel and center section is made up of a lighter titanium material. In the end we lose out. Unless you use a custom collector flange and just use the turbo period as is.

Oh well I'm just going to have to keep my fingers crossed and hope my modified housings will give me that extra ump to put me in in sleeper territory/record books.

Sorry people but I truly don't see how to make the 6.5 rs turbo a sleeper.
Unless the white rabbit flows post evo4 direction , but then again I highly doubt that.

Like I said, Evo 4 through Evo VIII turbos all spin in the reverse direction from conventional turbochargers. That is why they are TD05HR turbos. This includes the titanium versions. They all spin in the wrong direction.

Frankly, the only part of an Evo VIII turbo I would want would be the twin scroll turbine housing. But a new one would have to be cast to work on our cars.

Cold side and hot side are reversed. Direction it spins makes no difference -- if exhaust gasses are spinning the turbine, the compressor will spin in the correct direction to compress air through the intake tract. All you would need to do is flip it over and find a way to fit it in the housing.

That said, the reason the later 16G's perform so much better has little to do with the wheels, but much more to do with the housings. The nozzle area is a *much* more advanced design, and the e6.5 TME is a 10.5cm2 housing. Spool characteristics with such a large housing remain unchanged due to the nozzle area's design, and the large housing doesn't bottleneck topend like on earlier 16G's.

And it does all of this without sacrificing efficiency, ala s16g->b16g. Pretty nifty, eh?

There really wasn't that much of an efficiency sacrifice between the small 16G and the big. If there were, the big 16Gs wouldn't be totally destroying the smalls. ;) More flow = better.

Best I could do with a Small 16G was 113mph. I've run 118.78mph on my Evo III 16G. Same mods other than the turbo.

The direction the turbo spins does matter. The turbine and the turbine housing must be matched. A housing will only spin a turbine in a certain direction. And a turbine only wants to spin in a certain direction.
