Klamath Falls,
I got a datalogger last month and havent seen my timming go above 12*. I have no Knock and no leaks. My base timming is at 3* BTDC. I still have no idea whats going on. I have richened/leaned things on the safc by as much as 20% to no avail, going eather way eventualy makes ne knock. I get .75v-.82 volts through out the rpm range. when i play with my settings and get knock(30-40 counts) my timing goes down to 4*-6*. most of the of the time when I floor it my timming takes a dumpeven though I dont have knock.

Can some one please healp me???????

Thanks
KP

Use this to set your SAFC up correctly:

You SHOULD NOT be playing around with a SAFC like that. NOT GOOD. There was no reason why you should have bought one if you didn't know the right way to use it.

Second of all, how are you sure that you do not have boost leaks?

Base timing should be more like 5 degrees BTDC.

I know how to use the AFC how else would try to get rid of knock with out playing with the fuel if everything else was right. Thnks for trying to help I understand the a lot of people buy things and put them in but dont know hoy to use them.

I fornd out the problem. Software!!! I was using the russian software MMCD and changed over to the Tunerstine software. That being the only thing I changed did the trick. 5 counts of knock(worst) and 27* of timming(worst) through 3rd and 4th.

hope this helps anyone else using that software.

Thanks

my question is with the statement:

"You SHOULD NOT be playing around with a SAFC like that. NOT GOOD. There was no reason why you should have bought one if you didn't know the right way to use it."

I wish I popped into this world with a firm understanding of fuel and timing maps. I would have not blown up so many motors.

You don't have to be born with it, you just have to do research, read, and ask questions before you start playing around with shit. It's not hard.

However, it seems like the original poster does know what he is talking about, so I retract him as that statement's intended target.

Back on topic: I highly suggest a pressure test, and then you should tune for low throttle using the fuel trims. That will give you a good baseline to tune from.

i gotta question.....people keep talking about how they knock only a few times or what not......isnt knocking bad period and wont it do permanent damage? I hear people saying they had 40 counts of knocking in their dataloggers.....is there a limit to how many times its "allowed"? Are some knocks worse than others? Imma newb so please take it easy.

The knock sensor sensing knock is not a precise thing. That's why some knock is fine. Knock can come from mechanical noises and not just from engine internals about to blow up. With a little knock, the ecu will still be advancing timing because even it thinks it's ok to do so.

The knock sensor readings just need to be treated like most other gauges or sensors on the car in that you have to take various factors into account to know what it is trying to tell you. 40 counts of knock at full throttle at 6000rpms is generally bad news, but 40 counts of knock just touching the gas at 3000rpms means something else is going on because that's not real knock.

so how would u differenciate the difference between "ok" knock and "bad" knock, based upon your logger.....and for the guys that run in the top 15 quarter times......how many knocks do u guys get and consider accebtable to the point it wont damage your motor in your opinons......

Sorry kpz11, hopwfully i aint screwing up your thread.

Knock is bad. However, the knock sensor doensn't always report real knock. There is not a definitive way to tell if it is "ok" or not, so it is always best to assume it is not. If you get it, try to get rid of it, and if your motor blows up, then it was bad.

I just noticed this and thought I'd post to make sure everyone knows the Tunerstein shows degrees of timing retard, not knock sum. Multiply by three to get knock sum. If the Tunerstein shows 7 for knock, that's actually about 21 counts of knock.
