ok i'm about to get dsmlink next week. how do u tune the timing? how do u know what to make it? one guy told me to advance it until the check engine light comes on and then back off 2 degrees. this guy runs a 11.7 on a 20g on a stock internal 2g motor and on pump gas. stock head and everything like that and he ahs had dsmlink since it came out. is he right or does anyone have a btter idea? i know the global thing and the dead time and the air fuel, i know how to tune that stuff but i have no idea how to do timing.

With DSMLink, the check engine light comes on at around 5 degrees of knock induced retard by default, although that can be changed. Some people tune the timing by advancing it until there is a little knock, others tune to get as much advance with zero knock, its totally up to how comfortable you feel with pushing the knock envelope. Once you get it, you can see more for yourself.

I would retard the timming before boost, and add lots of fuel. This well help kill lag if your running a bigger turbo. Then while boosting, I would set it at about 17-18 degree advanced. Get all your fuel correction done so it dosent knock. Then start adding a few degree's of timing. Keep doing this till you get over 5 counts of knock. Add more fuel to combat the knock. Add more timing, then more fuel. keep doing this to the point were you can keep good advanced timming, with out no more then 5 counts knock

WELL I'M ONLY RUNNIN A PORTED AND CLIPPED 19C AND THERE IS NO LAG ON THIS TURBO. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE MY T25 SO DO YOU STILL THINK I SHOULD STILL RETARTD THE TIMING BEFORE BOOST?

I personally don't want anything to do with 5 degrees of knock. I want the knock to be 1 or under personally. Basically, its just a logging game. Set the car up, then make a pass, make a change, then run it again. Don't make to many changes at once, or you won't know what the problem is if you start to knock. My car with no knock and 0 advance is giving me around 15-16 degrees of timing. Once I get the afpr on, I'll start to add a few degrees of timing up top.

0-3 knock count = timing advance

3-7 knock count = keeps timing at the same degree

7-above = retarded timing.

Posts like this are the reason I was telling people in one of the other threads, to ask DSMLink questions in the DSMLink forum.

The statement below is something that I believe has been attributed to Todd Day and it was regarding the 1G ECU. But it is NOT relevant to a 2G ECU, and certainly not to a DSMLink equipped one, which is what this thread is about.

For a DSMLink equipped ECU, raw knock counts minus 1 then divided by 3 will give you your approximate timing retard.

no percent, at least not with DSMLink. Like I said, wait til you get it and play around with it a little to start asking questions ;) There is a raw knock value(like knock counts, or knocksum, or whatever you feel like calling it), and then there is the amount of timing retard due to this, which is a direct relationship.

and 2g's dont register knock in counts as far as i know right, isnt it a percent?
