I have a 98 eclipse gst with the 7 bolt motor and head. I just rebuilt the motor and tranny.. Just got it all back together and car wont start..

I have a idea as to why but im hopeing I can get some help...

With the rebuild..I put in 264/272 cams in the head. As we know the 2g 7 bolt head has the cam sensor on the intake cam.. WELL the cam itself has the slot for the sensor but yet was not tapped for the bolt to hold the key in place..\

I am running ECMLink v3 full so I figured it would not matter as im running a 95 ECU and have the plugs moved as they suggest with the check mark for the non sensor thing or what not..

Is this not wanting to start due to the fact that I do not have a cam sensor at all installed?? If so how is the beswt way to fix this problem?? Pull the cam and tap the end??

Yes the car will not start without a cam signal at all.No cam signal would lead too no spark drilling and taping the cam is your best way too fix the problem

Stupid question... would a 1g CaS work if I was to rewire it to the 2g CaS harness??

You should be able to use 1g cam sensor since it has 4 wires, +/-, crank signal and cam signal. I thought that 97+ dsms use a cam sensor that's not behind the intake cam gear but in the same spot as a 1g so you should be able to just use a 97+ cam sensor since you already have a crank sensor.

They do, but the sensor requires the intake cam end to be drilled and tapped as part of the sensor gets bolted to the intake cam itself.

You'll either need to remove the cam and drill/tap or use a 1g sensor. The former is a better option, but more work.

Thank you guys for all the info. I went ahead and pulled just the intake cam out.. and had it drilled and tapped :)

Glad to hear. Now make sure you put your CAS back on correctly and it should start up.

Well only 1 of 2 ways it can go on. I wasnt thinking when I pulled the cams off a few months ago and didnt take a pic of the key.. but its a 50/50 either it wont or it will start :)
