just got my EGT gauge today (autometer w/probe). i have searched how to install it and everyone says to drill and TAP the manifold. what do you mean "tap"? i don't wanna use that hose clamp looking thing. i know it can be done without it, but not sure how.

tapping is cutting threads. you use a tool that looks like a bit and turn it slowly inside the hole and it will cut the threads for the egt probe

Can the hole be drilled and tapped with the manifold still installed? I had heard once that this is okay to do as long as the engine is running, so that chips are blown away from the combustion chambers. Is this correct. I'm also getting ready to install my first EGT. And one last question....how far from the head should it be placed?

In that setup article it says that the temp should be about 1000dgrs at idle..and at 3500RPM cruising it should be about 1350dgrs...doesnt that sounda little high?
is that what the expected temps are?

Remeber those temps are in Farenheight for people who have an Auto-Meter gauge. If you have a celsius gauge(Greddy for example) then yes you would never want the temps that high.

what would be the disadvantage of tapping the probe too close to the head? i am aware that it is recommended 4-8 inches from the head, but would tapping it too close give a flase reading?

i got it installed. it was pretty easy. even though i killed my heat shielf with 3 holes, because i didn't have a big enough bit to get the probe through the shield. o well, nothing a dremel won't fix. i installed it like 7 inches from the head on the number 1 runner.

i idle at 800 when warm. when at WOT it does't go over 1275. so i guess i am doing pretty good. (i know i am running rich, so that's probaly why it is cooler

i also installed a a/f gauge, which is a basic piece of shit, but i only paid $30 something for it. so it fills the whole in my 3 gauge pod until i can get an oil pressure gauge and it amuses my friends at night, so i guess it serves some what of a purpose.

It would most likely make it read a bit high. Just how much, I don't know.

well, i have the autometer carbon fiber EGT and a TRE probe. i tapped it and used anti-seize on the threads, used the stainless steel wiring TRE sells to the firewall, and everything seemed to be installed as planned. as soon as i started it up, it idled at 200F... unreasonably cold, so i figured it wasn't working, or maybe needed to be broken in. i took it around the block and when i gave it some throttle it began to rise... to 1600F, then the needle when haywire and pointed straight down. i know im not running THAT hot, so what would cause that? maybe i need to disassemble everything and check the wiring?

That's a crazy EGT guage. Yeah I'd triple check your wiring. Make sure your getting 12 volts, check polority. My idle is 800-900 idel and 1200 at 55mph in 5th. Car is all stock except intake.

well im 99.999% sure that i wired it correctly (yellow +, red -) and that it isn't touching the manifold, however, there is always the ever present possibility that i am an idiot. i'll pull the probe and try a re-install, see what happens. if nothing, i'll call TRE and Autometer and see what they have to say. regardless, these carbon fiber gauges look sweet :) thanks
