I've searched and read everything I can find, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info on _laptop_ logging - everyone either pocket logs or has link. I'm still on stock 14b so I'm not ready to spring for link, just want a better idea of what my car's doing.

My question is, as far as cabling goes are the cables from 1glink.com pretty much my only option? They just seem ridiculously expensive for a couple feet of cabling.. BTW I'm planning on using Tunerstein on a new windows 7 laptop (Christmas present) if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!

Wvery1 is gna tell you to get link bro. I am saving up for it now as well. Just is the best hands down. getit and you wont regret it

He can make his own labtop logging software? I was unaware such a thing existed. I know of the pocket logger ### I have one. that is like 80 bucks for everything,

Any of the Palm cables with a null modem adaper an Usb adapter will work with a pc or you can build your own cable an switch the two pins that aren't a ground an use a palm emulator with MMCD Or with TunerPro

Also the V3 Ecmlink cable is a nice solution as its cost is right inline with decent Serial to USB adapters

The cable will NOT allow you to use the ecmlink software without a Ecm/dsm link chip FYI

If you need them I can post some links to everything tomorrow....

THANK YOU that's the kind of answer I was looking for LOL. So ECM's cable will work with other software? IE Tunerstein? I only reference that because most info I've found is on it, and seems to be the easiest laptop logger to learn. (And it's free:D)

I made my own cable. It's shown on here in the how too section.

Then you have several options for software.
1. Get a PDA emulator and run MMCD or Pocket Dyno
2. Use the TMO softfare. You can download that for free these days
3. Use TunerPro RT, also Free
4. Download Jackal and use that logger, allthough its geared for SD stuff.

I prefer the MMCD software myself.

Ah, yeah I'm trying to avoid that, erm, cluster---- of wire LOL. ECMLink's cable looks like a win though, and only $40! Hopefully someone can just confirm that it works with other software, their posts in another topic didn't really clarify that..

Yes I posted some screen shots of it working with a stock non Eprom ecu with the link cable in another thread.
But ya,
I can confirm it works with everything that Basterddsm said above though aside from the Tmo logger an also I cant confirm it works with Tunerstein as I havent tried to use it...

Awesome! Thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate it. Once I get the laptop and cable I'll report back whether it works with Tunerstein, and TMO if I can track down the software.

Jackal is $20 and it might be a nice spot to start. Use it as a logger until you get the pieces to tune with. That is what i currently run and i love it so far.

As far as the cable goes id pick up the v3 cable. I use the homebrew cable and its kind of messy, i'll be buying the v3 logger soon myself. Plus you have to buy a $30 keyspan adapter anyway to use it as usb if you have a laptop from this decade.

Edit: I have a copy of the TMO logger, i prefer it over ts or mmcd personally. I could probably send you a copy if its legal to do so LOL.

Perfect! Thank you for the link; I've tried searching TMO so many times and couldn't find anything like that LOL.
Stocker that's exactly why I posted this question, I didn't want to have to trust my own wiring skills haha.

Alright, bringing this thread back instead of making a new one.. Got my computer and cable from Santa (yay!) but can't get them to connect at all :banghead: I've tried with ECMLink V3 and TMOLogger, and both give connection errors. Link says "No reply received" and TMO will give either "Datalogger not found or lacking power" OR "Datalogger not properly connected to ECU". TMO's errors seem to just switch back and forth randomly has I hammer on the Connect button WTF I believe I have Tunerstein properly installed, so I'm going to give that a try in the morning and see if that works any better. I tried to find TunerPro RT and Jackal that bastarddsm mentioned, but TunerPro (RT version at least) is apparently not free, and Jackal can't be found ANYWHERE..

So to condense that ramble, is there something I'm missing that would cause TMOLogger and ECMLink to not connect/"link" with my car? Also, I noticed that the light on the ECMLink cable kind of flickers, like the data light on a wifi router (best way I can think of to describe it.) Should that light be doing something else if properly connected?? Thanks in advance guys!

TunerPro is free there is just a 10 sec nag screen for the optional donation TunerPro Download an the adx file jackel isnt free though it costs $20 now...http://forums.ds-map.net/

Also I stated above that As far as I know the Tmo logger doesnt work with the v3 cable and of course the Ecmlink application won't work...

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, drivers were installed from ECMTuning.com and I checked device manager to make sure the correct com port is selected. Although I'm realizing I'm a slight bit of an idiot - when I was on the TunerPro site I misread the page, thinking RT version had to be purchased.. :banghead: Got that and Stein installed now, so I'll give those a shot and report back
