Depends on if your PC's serial port will work with non-standard RS-232 levels that come from a passive cable (the first one) or needs real RS-232 signal levels which would require the active cable like the second schematic.

Will be using a serial-to-USB adapter. Will it matters?

It just moves the question from the PC to the adapter. Most that I've seen will accept the non-standard signals from a passive cable.

In other words, the first diagram should work on the PC with a serial-to-USB adapter using Palm OS.

Steve, is there a way to tap my serial cable for my palm, to charge the palm? All I have is a usb charger that came with it. If so which pin on the serial?.

While the diagrams look the same if you don't look closely, the Palm version changes the two pins or transmit and receive and uses a different sex connector. The passive one above is for a PC serial port. I did not check the active schematic to figure out which device it was for.

So the question is: Which cable will have a faster sampling rate?

Neither. The baud rate of 1920bps is fixed in the ECU, so it's going to be slow regardless of which cable you use.

Ed's correct. In practice MMCd on a typical Palm device seems to be the limiting factor.
