setting the timing in a 90 tsi awd

I have a 1990 tsi awd. I just finished putting my new head on the car. I read the different threads on setting the cas. I am just wondering which plug to use on the firewall. There is one plug with a rubber cap on it and there is also a another plug thats next to it. It is a single plug not like the one thats cover by the rubber cap. So I guess my questions is that which plug do I need to use to ground out my ecu and also do I need to set piston #1 to tdc before I put the cas in the car. I have looked at all the differnet threads about just want to make sure. Any info would help thanks

Please turn the engine over by hand to TDC, rotate the CAS to line up it's timing marks and install it.

Mark/highlite the timing mark on the crank pulley. Locate the timing check connector on the firewall (if you still have the factory cap on it great) and ground that connector. Make sure no datalogger is attached or make sure pin 10 on the DLC is not grounded.
Connect you timing light to plug 1 and the battery as needed. If it's a electronic advance light set it to 0 advance. Start the car and adjust the CAS until the pulley timing mark lines up with the 5* BTDC mark and tighten the CAS nut.
