what advantages do stand alone units (motec, aem, etc) have over dsmlink as far as fuel and timing adjustments?

Closed loop wideband o2 feedback

More resolution in the fuel map... More points in the table for RPM and load...

Full control of everything.

N20 fuel enrich thru the main injectors.

More coil drivers so you can run 4 individual coils.. COP..

There are so many advantages...

The DSM link is a bang for buck system... A mild to moderate car would do well on one..

A standalone is harder to setup but in the right hands with a wideband o2 simply phenominal..

If you have the time could you expand on each of these, comparing the differences of each system (stand alone vs dsmlink) if not it's okay I can search.

Thanks

Your best bet it to join the AEM forum and go to the DSM section..

More difference.. Fuel and timing trimmed for each cylinder.. One cyl knocks easier or is harder to knock it will fuel and time it a bit different... Places a adjustment for that cylinder to the map value.

I could type a phone book..

1. Not needed with a maf based system
2. Often a draw back to stand alones. Everything has to be set up.
3. Dsmlink offers N2O control and separate fuel tables
4. Can certainly run COP with dsmlink
5. There are so many draw backs to a stand alone

There are two dsmlink cars in the 9s. It is more than enough for 99% of the people on these boards.

The only problem I have with DSMLink is the timing control and it may have been fixed in newer versions that just moves timing regardless of load so if you add 3 degrees at 3500 it ALWAYS adds 3 degrees at 3500. No load variances. If that is fixed then it is awesome for 99% of the people and it is handy for areas with scanner type emmisions checks and very handy for 6bolt swaps eliminating the random misfire problem completely.

1. Not everyone wants to keep MAF..
2. Base maps are already setup on AEM.. Get fancy later once you have learned
3. Thats kool but can it do multi stage N20, progressive or staged injection?
4. Yes but not with one dedicated coil driver per coil...
5. There are so many limitations to link.. The draw backs on stand alones are really only cost and a little more difficult setup.. Not too dificult if you understand it all but for those who dont yes its harder...

Still missing closed loop wideband... More control of things like cold start enrich... For E85 peeps...

The thread was advantages to standalones.. Not advantages to link.... If someone were to ask what the pros of link over a standalone I would have listed your points.. I admit its a great product... Other things exist because some need them.

Your on the right track then, I was just tryin to figure out what I was missing out on with link and decide if it would be worth it to spend another 300 or so on full ems.

Originally it was only 550 for the dsmlink, now I have to port the ecu, and buy an eprom, that sets me back 800.

you were considering a standalone and keeping the maf setup?

If you have to ask, then get DSMLink, that is all you will EVER need, trust me
road race engineering will be tuning my car initially so, it's really not an immediate issue weather I understand the software or not. I pick up fast on that type of thing though, I would not be afraid to get because give me a few weeks of working with it and reading and I will figure out my way around.

Either way I just bought an eprom and dsmlink.

dsmlink + 300 or so does not equal ems + map setup. maybe i missed something?

No, maybe I did. I thought I had seen some engine management selling for 1200 or so before, I havn't really looked very far into it though........

I'm in a similar dilemma

dsmlink seems to be easier to mess with and very understandable.

but its costs almost 600 including getting your eprom socketed .

but if you don't own a eprom thats another 200-300 dollars extra so now your at 800-900 dollars.plus ive read that a wideband o2 works even better with dsmlink.so now your looking to spend about 300 more dollars .and it still keeps the maf.

so the total estimated cost to get the maximum out of dsmlink is about 1100-1200 dollars.

now I'm one of those people who want the maf out of the way to have more room in the engine bay and also to vent my bov.so in my opinion aem ems, haltech and any other stand alone management is almost close to the price range .so with all the advantages of ems listed on this thread why not go all the way??? its probably going to cost maybe a few more hundred dollars and in my opinion is very much worth it.

and also if your not going to tune it yourself alot of tuners charge similar prices to dyno tune a car with dsmlink and a standalone .so i think alot of people get dsmlink because its more easier to use and you save more money getting it tuned or tuning it yourself.im still doing alot of searching and learning alot more about these things before i purchase anything.i would still like to hear people replies about this thread.its very knowledgable
