I have only had my evo 3 for 2 days now but for some reason i cant seem to get it tuned right. I have a 255, 650's, and a gm maft for tuning. Now this is odd, i get on it in first gear and it'll spit and sputter from runnin rich, it'll do the same in second and sometimes third but as soon as i bang 4th, i get like 25 counts of knock. Now, if i lean it out 5%, i get 7 all the time and a LOT in the higher gears. Do you think i have a problem with my maft or something? I was reccomended using an afc but nothing's open tomorrow and id like to get this straightened out. BUT what i did notice, although it runs rich and sputters at 4500-5000 in 3rd doin a pull, it pulls rediculously hard @ 18 lbs. Its pretty crazy. Any help would be appreciated. :thumb:
 
well i kinda figured it out, i havent checked my timing since i put my motor in my car so i assumed my timing was advanced too far so i dont know how far its out, but i retarded it the whole way. I dont get any knock now but the car feels sluggish..obviously. 1, how do you check the timing, and 2 what would the optimal timing be for an evo 3?
 
UPDATE: Well, since i retarded the base timing almost the entire way, i mean if you were to turn it to retard it more, you may get 2-3 mm of a turn in. Well i logged 3rd gear and to my surprise even after leaning it out 30%, i still have 24deg ta at 6-6500 and 0-1 knock (kinda sparratic). Whats goin on here?? WTF
 
make sure you know what the actuall base timing is. instead of guessing because that is not helping at all.

you people amaze me. You are messing with the base timing without using a timing light? Wow that makes no sense. Get the base timing correct then come back and ask for tuning advice.
 
Although i dont know how to check the timing and i have like no tools right now, i was hoping for a general awnser as to why even though my timing is retarded the whole way basically, im still seeing massive amts of timing but no knock?
 
It all comes down to one thing. You have no idea what you are doing. To even begin thinking about tuning your car, it has to be in perfect operating condition. So set your timing, fuel pressure, idle, etc. Check for boost leaks, exhaust leaks, fluid leaks. Make sure you have the correct spark plugs. i'm not going to explain it all but you get the idea. 24 degrees of timing is not massive by any means and 0-1 counts of knock is good. Try turning the boost back to stock, get the car in perfect operating condition. Read as much as you can about tuning, and maybe invest in an safc. The search button should be your best friend for the first year or two of being on this forum. Then you should be on the right track.

Well, i got my car timed okay, see about 5 deg with the ecu ungrounded and my car runs great at 15psi. But...i also did a boost leak test and that held 20 psi for about a minute or so but as soon as i drive my car at 20 psi with it tuned accordingly w/the maft, it just knocks sparratically. I think i just may need an afc cause its knockin down low and VERY rich up top. Last question: Are FIC 650's actual 650s or are they more like 630s or something like that. I had to compensate when i had my 450s by setting my maf't to 510s cause i have the stock fpr and a walbro 255. But should the same be done with the injectors i have now? It seems my car runs better set to 660s than 650s. Any help would be appreciated.
