Check for a boost leak.

In addition to the boost leak test, replace your plugs, plug wires and fuel filter if they haven't been done recently. You may also want to verify that your plug gap is .028 since plugs do have a tendency to widen the gap with increased use and you could be blowing out your spark.

Hope that helps,

Andy

I am having the EXACT same problem you described. I have no friggin clue what it could be, although you are completely stock so that is odd. This only happened after i finished installing my new uicp and maft setup + a hks ssqv bov.

Heres the link to my other thread i just cant figure it out -

OK well after lots of screwing around and trying stuff I have fixed my car thought an update is in order.

To try and fix my studdering problem I have tried the following

New Plugs
New Plug Wires
Tuning
AFPR thought it was rich

After all that I tried the coils and low and behold that's what it was. I have a 2G mind you but the 1G coils also fit. So I called around and found a brand new set at the dealershop 250 canadian and 250 canadian for the transistor I thoguht it was one of the two. Any ways said F that and called the wreckers. First placed I called a bud of mine had a set from a 90 Turbo AWD so I said what the hell and got em figuring I could mcgiver them to work or something. Well I just took all the old wiring off the and bolted my 2g harness onto the coils and my problem is now solved.

So if anyone is having a misfire or backfire missing etc from 3.5k to about 5k it could be your coils. Also if you have a 1G or 2G looks like either coils will fit but keep in mind its not a bolt on I did have to modify the coil bracket because the 1G coil is a little larger.

READ ME:

I had that problem until about a week ago. I spent 9 months diagnosing it. It turned out to be a rocker arm had come off.

Check that. It's a cheap/free fix, and the valvecover gasket is $40

I was having the same problem as hellotbone and replaced the coils, put stock wires back on, and a set of NGK BPR7ES plugs and I have no problems at all.

For the record, I believe from 92 and up 1g (turbo and N/T) 4g63 coils will snap right into the 2g harness, the earlier ones require hellotbone's listed modification. I put on a coil pack from a 92/93 N/T 4g63 and it just bolted directly in.
