tuning with maft/safc I question

can i tune my car pretty good with just the maft and an afc I? do i really need to get wideband? is the perfect a/f ratio 14.3 or is it like a 13.3 cause my friends tiberon has his set at 13.3 and told me that it was professionally tuned to be as close to perfect as you can get. let me know. im getting my afc tomorrow.

Most turbo DSM's shoot for 10:1 - 12:1. Alot of people have MAFT + AFC and you should be able to leave the maft settings at 0 (unless your running huge injectors) then fine tune with the AFC.

WOW!! So much bad info out there. Your buddies engine is a timebomb waiting to happen if hes tuning for 13.3:1. ON pump gas, you MIGHT be able to run 11.5:1, but I'd keep it closer to 11.0 - 11.2:1, just to be on the safe side. When dealing with race gas, you can go as high as 12.3:1.

As for the other guy that said "most turbo DSM's shoot for 10.0:1 to 12.0:1". Uh...... could you get a little more general with a statement. Sure you can tune your car for 10.0:1, but it will feel like a 88 CRX HF, running so rich. And if you tried to tune for 12.0:1 on pump gas, let us know how much that engine rebuild is gonna cost.

We need to know what type of gas you are running, how much boost, what type of turbo, etc. I tuned my car to 30psi on 110 octane, FP Green, to 11.9:1 Car absolutely flies with zero knock. Hell, I may be able to run some 118 octane, and take out even more fuel. Maybe bring the a/f up to 12.1-12.2, and maybe drop a few tenths off my times.

I was telling him what the car would be safe at (compared to 13.3:1), sure 12:1 is pushing it but most of the SoFla guys I hang out with pushin 300 - 400 hp run near 12:1 on pump and they dont go around rebuilding their engines.

Umm guys he never said anything about tiburon to be turbo. Maybe what he tried to say is that his buddys all motor setup is tuned around 13.3 and i think that pretty good tune for that application.

Im pretty sure hes talkin about his dsm because he started out with "can I tune my car" and ends with "let me know. im getting my afc tomorrow."

And to the guy telling me "Uh...... could you get a little more general with a statement." For the people still on the SMIC trust me the a/f is gunna be under 11:1 to drown the knock.

yeah i was actually talking about my car but my friends tiberon is a turbo. he had it custom made by some tiberon gurus i guess. n e way, so i want to shoot for about 11.1 for the a/f ratio? dont burn me here im a newbie to tuning and that is why i asked first so wouldnt end up doing a rebuild. a little off subject but what fuel pressure are you 20+psi running? will adding pressure on my afpr make my car run richer. probablly a dumb question but i had to ask cause i was told by alamo motorsports that i could raise it to 40psi and tune for that. my mods are in my profile and i was wanting to shoot for about 20psi with pump93 if possible. one more question, i havent had a chance to install my afc and was wanting to know if it tells you what your a/f ratio is at. thanx for all your time and your patience. i wont be a newbie for too long.
