I hear many different answers to this, somebody please help!!!

Is it possible to run 550's & no AFC on a 1G with a 20g, lower honeycomb removed, 9.0 compression, running between 10-15 psi
and not run too rich at WOT or idle? I have 450's on now and I have to run 100 octane over 10 psi. I want to run 91 for obvious reasons.
I can play with the base fuel pressure and MAF screw, but will this be enough?

Cheap fix would be to switch to a 2G MAS. 20% more flow unmetered. That should be close to matching the 550's w/o an SAFC. I suppose you could "hack" your 1G MAS and get the same results too, but I'm not going to recommend doing that.

hack 1G MAS = $0 and it could pay off or it may not.
2G MAS = ~$100 and it should work pretty well w/ the 550's.
SAFC = ~$300 and you get to TUNE your car.

Choice is yours.

i'm now sure i see the sense of having a 20G and not wanting an afc...

even if for some unknown reason you could pull it off. you would never be getting its full potential... might as well of just bought a small 16g if you wanted to do that.

and you need a AFC to use a 2G MAS

and you car would run like complete crap with 550's and no way to tune them in.

Man that's nuttier then squirrel poo. No it's not possible. What ever it is you are smoking though pass it around :thumb:.

You are crazy to think you don't need an AFC with 550s..... take a look at the handy chart on Road Race Engineering's website for more info, and their tuning FAQ

Quacylla, puff -puff- pass man, stop hoggin' the good stuff ;)

I was asking because I got a good deal on the 550's and dont have an AFC yet and I wanted to run them for the fact that my car was leaning out bad. So I installed them, and a turbo fuel regulator{lower psi} and my car runs fine, a little lumpy at idle but not bad whatsoever, and it pulls to redline finally. Cant keep the Nitto 555r's on the ground even in fourth. So, yes it is possible.

I'd love to see some logs of your car.

"Cant keep the Nitto 555r's on the ground even in fourth. "

And some time slips. For someone that can't afford better then 91 octane peeling 4th is quite the accomplishment.

Its not that I cant afford 100, but 50 dollars a fill versus 20 dollars just sounds nicer and leaves more money in the pocket for more go faster goodies

My friend's AFC took a shyt (and then the broken unit was stolen on top of that  ). He hasn't gotten a new AFC yet. He has 550s and a MAS I hacked for him. The car even passed emissions like that (Colorado style rolling test. Read: tough). But it doesn't run all that great and at some throttle points and rpms it's just wrong altogether. With an AFC it won't be perfect either because it's a 2D tuning device, but you can still get it way better than with no AFC at all. He has a 16G@19lbs daily. His car is pretty much as good as you could get without fuel control and to me it's still pretty shytty. So 550s without fuel control, as good as you can get = pretty shytty.

Do it at your own risk.

I hear everyone saying how bad they're cars run without an AFC, but just my idle is BARELY rougher than stock and when Im winding down the motor from high rpms it has a little popping, not backfiring. I will be getting the AFC soon but I couldnt be happier with the performance difference from the 450's and it actually runs very good on 91 for the first time. I was also told I couldnt run more than 9-10 psi on my non-turbo motor, but I run 14 on a 20g everyday for the last 5 months without any failure, so anything is possible.
