This would likely be the forum to compile the most accurate info.

So I put it here.

I want to do a spreadsheet of all compatable blocks for swaping and building hybrids.

So accurate specs and what you had to do to build what would be helpfull.

RRE has a list of actual mitsu blocks.

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/mitsumotorapplications.htm

I need the hyundai block info and what model and year they came in.

Well my 64 6 bolt came from an 89 hyundia sonata and after a second try i found it bolts up to mounts perfectly(read somewhere in here it didnt) only needing a boss tapped for knock sensor and 4 holes drilled in deck to match 63 water passages.

Engine: 4gcs
Displacement: 2350cc
Cranktype: 6 Bolt
Vehiicle: 1989-1991 Hyundai sonata
Block Compatability: 1&2gT
Neccessary Modifcations: K, DC, S, P
Comments: A 6 bolt block with stronger main webs than a 4g63

K(knock sensor mount)
DC (Deck to head Coolant passages)
S (1g squirters)
P (pistons for turbocharging)

It will have a legend of some kind that is just what I'm running with for now.

I might also list bore and stroke for each.

Looks like 1992-1994 bodied sonatas had 2.0 7 bolt mitsubishi blocks in place of the 2.4.

Same with the 95-98 fours.

From 99 to 03 they went back to a 2.4 but still a 7 bolt.

So what are the engine ID numbers for the 2.0 and the 7 bolt 2.4?

So is 4gcs just Hyundai jargon fro G64b or did two variations of 6 blt 2.4 go in the earlier cars?

The latter 7's are just 4g64's

The Sonata block already has an alternative location for the knock sensor. Don't mess with the cooling passages on the deck, it's not needed.

If you're going to list the blocks, make a legend of the other stuff you need as well and what parts must be swapped from other motors.

There is also this one,
85-87 Galant
4G64
Coolant holes in the deck surface the same as the 63
Knock sensor hole same as the 63

Very hard to find..

I need more info on the Sonata block.

1) Alternative location for the knock sensor...where?

2) Is there any plugging or drilling of the deck? If yes, where? I'm using a 1g head.

Please let me know, as my block is at the machine shop.

Thanks.:)

There is a threaded boss right above where the A/C compressor bracket bolts on. This location seems to work fine on the sonata block in my wifes car.

No plugging required on the deck surface, but two little holes need to be drilled right above the water pump. :dsm:

Would this be the balance shaft check hole? Thanks for the info.

So some six bolt 2.4's are marked 4g64?

I was under the impression that all the 4g64's were 7 bolt engines and all G64B's were six bolts.

It's on the deck.

You need to match the feed holes of a 2.0 DOHC block.

I guess on that block any extra holes that aren't used on the head don't line up with head holes anywhere so get pluged via the head and HG.

Some blocks need some hole pluged so the head gets fed coolant right. This one just needs feed holes.

Strike that.

The two small holes by the water pump some say are not necessary as there are already enough holes in the head. But to match the passages exactly to the way a 2.0 is setup these two holes need to be drilled.

With any of these just check to see that the holes in the head that are actually used on a 2.0 get the used on the 2.4.

Use the 2.0 gasket on the head and see which ones actually feed from the 2.0 block deck into the head. You can't go wrong if the 2.4 is made to flow the same.

There is a hole that it will go right in on some blocks but it is'nt as centered as the 2.0 hole.

It will work and actually being closer to #1 may be a good idea. Some people have tapped the boss and others use the existing hole.

MNGSX, I have two 2.4's I have the G4CS sonata block in my wifes car and I have a 4G64 in my race car. I only deal with 6 bolts. I don't know what my 4G64 came out of because I found it just laying in a junk yard. I just made sure the bell housing bolt spacing was 12 and 1/4. And it's stamped 4G64. I figure it came out a 85-87 galant, since those were the years they came with 2.4's, they were 2.0's till the early 90's I think.

Ya the threaded boss for the knock sensor will be right above the A/C compressor on 1 cylinder. There was no blank boss on my G4CS block that could have been drilled for the knock sensor.

The coolant holes are very easy to add, They are the two small holes nearest the water pump on the deck surface. Just lay the 2.0 head gasket on the deck, center punch and drill the small holes with the same size hole that in the 2.0 deck. All the other holes are the same.

Please correct the list below if needed.

Differences on a 1989-1991 Hyundai Sonata 6 bolt 4g64 (4gcs) is:
1. the rods and pistons
2. head gasket
3. knock sensor mounts in a different spot
4. 1g oil squirters need to be installed
5. two small holes need to be drilled in the deck
6. 1994 Galant DOHC timing belt and cam sprockets are required

other than the above items, one can use 6 bolt 4g63 parts correct? (ie oil pump, front case, water pump, etc...with no modifications)

It would be against the rules for me to link directly to my site but most of this information is spelled out very clearly on my site in the engine shop section under tech info. My profile will link you.

1. pistons are different but can be used for light turbo duty. rods are same as the 1g big rods.

2. Most 2.0 head gaskets will work with a stock bore 2.4L. Anything larger and you'll need to use the Cometic, Fel-Pro, or Victor gasket.

3. Knock sensor mounting is a non-issue.

4. Squirters do not "need" to be installed but they could be installed. This is accounted for in the piston design.

5. Yes

You're correct about the bolt on parts.

Nice post and nice webpage.

I wish I knew web page design that well.

Overall 10.0 out of a 10.0 rating.:thumb:
