Hey guys, been having this annoying little problem, hopefully it's not a sign of a bigger problem but, while car is in neutral there's a faint squeaking sound coming from the engine bay, it's audible while in the cabin. It seems to go away only when I depress the clutch, but not all the way, it goes away when clutch is pressed in like 1/5 of the way, any ideas?
I took the A/C belt off, and P/S and alternator look a bit old, could it be one of those, or harmonic balancer? Or could this be clutch related?

And to those crankwalk people out there, just redid the timing and crank has no play.:thumb:

I bet you a harmonic balancer is your issue b/c I had a very simliar problem. I checked my old one and it "looked" ok but I finally said screw it and put a new one in and the squels went away.

You can go to about any part store and get one, I know Advance can ge them next day order is you have those near you

Since it goes away when you push the clutch pedal in than it seems as though its clutch related. A bad TOB can cause noise so thats a possiblity. Your going to need someone to cause the noise while you are looking in the engine compartment listening to see where it comes from. It will be pretty obvious as to what side of the engine is making the noise.

If it helps any, the pitch of the squeaking changes as the clutch is depressed, more and more high pitch until it goes away when 1/5 of the distance is reached.

Hrm... I hate to use that horrible word, but CW possibility? Check you thrust bearing endlplay. Its not overly difficult to do on the car. Otherwise is it possible that it has to do with the belt loosing momentum due to engaging the clutch and thus the belt is slipping a little?... doubtful though. Just ideas...

Mine car did the exact same thing as yours, I could acutally pop the clutch at times and the squel would go away or if I mess with how far it was pressed in and it would change the pitch of the squel. Its a hell of alot cheaper than CW, or messing with the clutch or any of that crap. If you have to get it try it out and if it does not work take it back to the parts store and tell em you did not need it

9 times out of 10 if you hear a squeak squeal chirp or anything close to that when you mess with your clutch system, it's your throw-out bearing. it's the peice that goes to the end of your pressure plate engagement arm (clutch arm). different terms for lots of things.

I dont think it has anything to do with his clutch. I would bet it is either his power steering or alternator belts. I have the same issue on my car, got it tightened up and it went away. It came back again and tightened it up again. The sound would go away when i depressed the clutch in as well. Could be harmonic balancer, could be a belt

TOB...

Off topic: 21,168 posts, Defiant?! I wonder how many hard drives Luda has had to purchase because of you...... :D

Wouldnt the throw out bearing make a really loud pitched squeek and then go away? Thats the reason I didnt think it was that. I suppose after actually thinking about it, it does make sense that it could be the TOB.

I changed waterpump along with timing stuff not too long ago(3000 miles if not even).
I forgot to mention this, but I'm shooting for belt.... because it sometimes squeaks, and sometimes doesn't... like after a good 20-30 minute drive, you pop the hood and it doesn't squeak..?
I'll try changing the balancer and belts all around.
I looked at my P/S pulley, and it looks a bit distorted, warped a little even around the edges.

Mine does the same thing. The sound goes away almost as soon as I touch the clutch pedal. What could be the negative effects, assuming it's the TOB, if it is not replaced?

so what about your crank pulley, did you ever try that?

I have a similar problem but I don't want to start a new thread....

When stopped, I hear a squealy-belt type sound.... until i depress the clutch

When moving at random times I hear a faint chirp and can feel the car slow slightly, as if I've tapped my brakes just slightly

occasionally the chirp is drawn out into a squeal, with the same slight slowing effect for the duration.

the slowing is so slight that I can't really feel it unless I'm paying attention to it, it helps to be able to hear the noise at the same time.

so far I'm thinking TOB from reading around on here. What do you guys think.

Also, what are the effects of the bad TOB? and how long can I wait to fix it? Should I even be driving the car at all?

Oh, and in related news I just bought this car a couple of weeks ago (still working on drivability before I can get to mods :( ) and it had a rebuilt tranny and act 2600 clutch installed on it within the last three months.

UPDATE: got the TOB changed a few weeks ago. Problem solved. This one anyway.

LOL at all the off the wall responses!! It's called diagnosing people it's not extremely difficult.... Before I even read the thread I narrowed it down to TOB or something with the drivetrain. When he pushes in the clutch the sound goes away, how the hell does that have anything to do with his power steering pump, alt, or any of his belts!?!? WTF

To the op- it is 99.9% likely that your tob is on it's way out. Which sucks cause now you have to drop the tranny just to replace a 25 dollar part.

:thumb:So glad you knew and enlightened all of those who didn't. Good Job.....

mine actually was doing the same thing i fixed it today after work. What it was, was one of the belts. I'm not sure which one it was since i troubleshot both of them at the same time... but heres what i did... Tightened the power steering pump normally, tightened the alternator but instead of leaving it at that, bolt thats on the right side of the pulley (it should go through an aluminum block that links up with the actual adjuster screw).. the other side of that bolt should stick out about a half inch.. i put a longer bolt in place of it and a lock washer with a nut just for extra hold... after all that i started it up drove about 15 miles home from work and no squeal - oh you may want to check and see if your main alternator mounting bolt (the one that acts as a hinge) is still there, the nut on mine backed itself off a long time ago.

oh, and mine stopped squealing when pushed the clutch in too - my blitz i color said i was putting out 14.0V with the clutch in, when i let it out - the belts started screaming and the voltage went down to 11.8V

Didn't take a genius... It was more a rant of if you have no idea, don't post and confuse people but thanks for the sarcasm.

Release bearing, mine does the same thing and i know it's that little effer, i'm going to wait utill the new tranny comes in. I got one with my act 2600 but i think the guys who intalled it took the release bearing for their car and put the old one back in. What a life. :talon:
