Slipping clutch - what could cause this besides a bad clutch

Brief history:
I just bought the car maybe 2 months ago from another member and he had the clutch put in about 4000 miles before me buying it. He had that done when it was professionally converted from an auto to a manual (hence the new clutch) and he told me it was some generic stage 2 clutch. I have no reason to doubt him since he was very honest about everything, telling me all the bugs it had and so on.

Problem:
Its slipping so bad it seems like I'm revving in neutral when I hit the powerband. It started doing this all of a sudden the end of last week - no gradual start to the slipping WTF . On friday, it pulled hard 1st thru 5th. Saturday, 1st does ok but 2nd thru 5th slip bad if I give it more than 20% throttle .

If you feel it can't be anything besides a bad clutch, please jump over to the thread I started to get ideas on what clutch to go with if that ends up being the problem - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246073

But if you have an idea of something else that it just might possibly be, please say it - I welcome all ideas short of aliens "slip-raying" my car while I sleep.

As far as oil on the disc, my half moon gasket/seal/whatever its called has been leaking and it runs down the block to where the tranny and motor meet, but I don't see that as causing this problem.

I will be pulling the tranny this weekend (hopefully) so if there is an oil leak in there I'll find out.

As far as adjusting the clutch, I did adjust the master cylinder rod according to the info found on Road Race Engineering's website - http://www.roadraceengineering.com/clutchandflywheeltech.htm (near the bottom of the page)
On this note, my clutch seems to be engaging toward the top. When I did this adjustment it seemed to move the engagement point more towards the middle for a little bit of time, but after a 5 minute drive the engagement point was back to the top .

xveganxcowboyx:
That sucks. :notgood: But thanks for the heads up.

If during the time where the clutch engagement in the middle and your clutch did not slip, then your clutch is fine. The clutch engagement will move up due to the 2G pedal pump up phenomenon. Read further on that exact page you posted about adjusting the upper stop.

I adjusted the upper adjuster during lunch to a point where the clutch pedal doesn't even rest up against it, still didn't help :(.

My clutch got worse. 1st gear was slipping on the way to work this morning, so I parked it at home when the upper adjustment didn't help it on the drive home for lunch. I'm now stylin' the family loaner (a red elantra wagon :D).

I have 2 more questions for the experts of dsmtuners -
1:
Would a bad master or slave cylinder cause my clutch to not completely engage? I would think its the other way around since that whole system is used to move the clutch away from the flywheel.

2:
This quote is from RRE's website -
2Gs need free play at the top of the pedal travel. If it is close to no travel and right on the edge, then it pumps up. Only 2Gs have a relief valve in the master cylinder that needs to be uncovered so fluid can go back into the reservoir on the clutch release. If not, it gets tighter and tighter and tighter. Then it may slowly relieve the pressure and it is back to normal. Just a 2G thing. You need more free play at the top of the pedal travel."
Does that relief valve then become uncovered when the clutch is completely engaged? And could it possibly become plugged by something therefore causing it to not relieve pressure? (or am I totally misreading it?)
