Are the Japanese trannys different ...I might have one....everything bolts up perfect but the torque converter was thinner than the original...and the bolt holes are off by just enough so I cant thread the bolt ( i tried spinning the converter to each hole nothing worked)....the shaft comming out of the tranny is 3 1/2" long and the one on my tranny was 4 1/4" long.....The housing on the new tranny is 4 1/4" deep and the old tranny was 4 3/4 deep so the new tranny housing was 1/2" shallower than the old one for the torque converter to fit in....HELP I am getting my ars kicked by this thing........By the way this tranny was out of an 95-96 eclipse turbo awd.....my car is a 95 talon turbo awd are the converters or the mounting plates different ?

You are not going to find too many here that will have this knowledge. We do have a few members who are in Japan and other countries. I don't know if you can do a search by country but that is a possibility. You may be able to contact the factory in Japan and describe your problem and or have good parts man dig for the info.

Maybe someone sold you a bum bill of goods, contact the seller.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Cheers,
GTM

If it came out of a 95-96 Eclipse it's not from Japan. I don't think there was an auto transmission connected to any JDM awd turbo 4g63 during those years. I believe the only vehicle with that drivetrain setup druing those years was the Evo 3 and Evo 4 and they didn't have an auto transmission.

Contacted the dealer they are sending the torque plate for the tranny....Hope it works.....The tranny came with transfer case, torque converter and tranny...it bolts up perfect to my 95 talon and all mounts are exactly the same as my old tranny along with the electrical so I would imagine it came out of an eclipse or a talon....I will post results when I get the plate and get it together....

Good for you. Did they give you any idea what the old one might have been from?

Yes please do and take some measurments of the new one as well so we can file it away for a possible repeat.

I'm a little curious/apprehensive/scared to know about the gear ratios.

I see you have a tsi awd. If the transmission and rear axle final drive ratios are different, you could have some serious safety issues.

There should be a part number/serial number on the case somewhere. I would guess it's on the bellhousing near the top mounting flange.

Please post it.

Maybe somebody somewhere can decode it for us?:thumb: and give us gear ratios and etc...

Is the matching rear diff available from the same source as well?

I admire your audacity at trying something new and different.

However, please proceed with due caution during the first test drive. If the ratios are indeed different, things could interesting/dangerous pretty quickly.

Gtm, or anybody, can we devise a test to verify the internal ratios? It's an interesting question, and I'd rather answer it in the shop than with broken parts on the road....

Broken bits of t-case or center diff. are probably not very good things to see in the rear view mirror...:D

Off the top of my head, no.

Yet if he locks up a front and rear wheel say on one side then turns the other 10 revolutions won't the other free wheel with the same revolutions???

My concern is the torque converter output differences if one is a lock-up (longer) converter and the other isn't he could loose all his pump pressure because the dogs don't reach or even exist. ???

I'm hoping all is well ...But I too am a little worried about the size of this converter and its durability with the awd.. It definately had a transfer case bolted to it so it should be able to handle it if it had it before...The dealer did say that I will need to use the transfer case that came with the tranny as long as I am using the converter that came with it. This should be fun...LOL

You did understand toybreaker point?? It's not so much the transfer case but the differential ratios should be the same or withing design limits. Not all mfgs have the same ratio front and rear for various design reasons which we man need to explore at some point before you install.

To make the earlier suggested revolution count the transmission needs to be temp installed complete with axles attached. I don't know if you have a viscous coupling that will permit slipping while testing. Nothing has to be torqued just hung with a few bolts in key places.

Yea GTM I did understand toy breakers point I will test it as soon as I get her together....I'll post results.....Thanks for all the input....I use to be into snowmobile racing for 10 years I buitl and raced my own stuff thats where I got the (wforacing) from..I think I may have found my new love...I plan on building something in the future this is my first one so I am learning as I go....And I love a challenge..LOL

Super, just making sure I'm awake and we are on the same page.

I don't think it's necessary to attach the engine to confirm final drive ratios. If you don't have enough mounts to hold the tranny in position consider slinging it off a 2x4 piece of wood long enough to span across the shock towers and a chain or rope. You can protect body paint with swatches of carpet on the ends which also gives it a better purchase. Hopefully this won't even be necessary if you can find the ratio stamped on the cases.

Never been on a snowmobile much less any hands on experience. toybreaker on the otherhand may need them for commuting and he's way ahead of you in filling up the stables with 4 DSMs. And he may be one of the few that has had all running at the same time. :)

My feelings are they are awrully fine cars just hard to get use to. I'm too old to be a slave to a car and these can do that to you. Still, where can you find a $500 car that will out perform most of current production iron with no modifications.

I'm not the person to ask for specifics though toybreaker and I have $ bet that I've not been able proof yet until I can find a schematic of the ECU. :)

GTM

I had a problem like that. I bought a 95-96 awd, automatic transmission from e-bay saying they were, "imported from Japan", big mistake. When I got it, it was just like you said, the output shaft is about an inch shorter than my broken ass stock trans. So I did the right thing. I took my car and broken ass trans. to http://www.importperformancetrans.com/. It's there and it should be done soon. :rocks: I can't wait. Hope everthing works out. Peace.
