EGR Block

I have performed the EGR mod where you add a block plate. My car has been idling very rough and wouldn't stay running unless warmed up. This made a big difference but it is still idling a bit funny. I was thinking about adding some RTV to the plate when I mounted it but wasn't sure if I should. Has anyone else done this mod and used some form of gasket maker on either side of the plate? Let me know if you have time.

There is suposed to be a gasket there. RTV would help im sure.
alot of people are finding out the EGR block off mod isnt really that great of a idea.

How so? I really just wanted to get my idling fixed and it did help but in a very minute way. I suppose purchasing a new gasket or EGR is fine with me also.

Read and understood. So what should I do about the idle issue? Replace the EGR Valve or just the gasket?

I would try the gasket first since it would be cheapest. Then if you still have issues, try a differnt EGR. Or try some RVT on your EGR and if its still an issue, get a new EGR and gasket. Or just add some RVT to the block off plate and see if it fixes your problem.

I took some video of the car idling today. Check it out and see if anything rings a bell with you guys. At this point, I may just pay to hook it to the diagnostic machine at a local shop. It seems to run great but I'm perplexed about this whole idle issue.

OK...thats fine for a stock daily driver...but, just look at any high power 4G63..that is, any talon that can reach 10 sec 1/4 with a regular curb wieght...these cars have to trim all they can to achieve it...proof...just read...and for that matter....look at engine pics of the fastest cars.....very spartin indeed...simple is best....NO...pulling emissions equipment wont be way to gain power...or fix idle surging...but looking after it and keeping it in perfect operation will help the car run as it was designed...and to pass EPA standards..

I'm not real sure what you are getting at here besides stating the obvious. Your post is all zen-like and while I appreciate the effort, it has absolutely nothing in the way of advice for helping my issue. Additionally, there are no epa tests for my area.

We hooked up a snap-on scan tool but there aren't any errors showing and no CEL. Does autozone use a scan tool or a diagnostic tool? The guy up the road has some $10K unit that supposedly tells you how much air pressure is in the tires (just kidding of course but it is very in depth). Anyway, if Autozone has something better than the typical scan tool, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but when you blocked off the egr valve did you cap off the vac lines that were attached to it?

You don't sound like an idiot but perhaps I might. I didn't remove any of the hoses so no, I didn't cap anything off. As I said before, I didn't use any gasket maker or the like so my plan is to pull the block off plate and put a new gasket in. Do you think capping would help? Thanks for the input.

Well i sell these and i recommend two ways to people

1. You can use the plate as a gasget, inbetween the egr valve and intake, just coat it with rtv on both sides. that way you dont have to buy new bolts or cap off the vac lines

or

2. Remove the egr valve, cap off the vac lines that are comming from it. Use smaller bolts and washers, and use the stock gasget that the egr valve used. Its metal so i always say to put a light coating of rtv on that just to make sure.

Thanks for the help. I was hesitant to put the RTV on but I'll work on that. I did leave the EGR on and hooked up to the vac lines. I think I'll be installing some GR2's this weekend so maybe I can squeeze the RTV routine in as well. Thanks again.
