I ahve done some rading on here and have seen a few threads but not many on swapping my stock N/T cams with those of a turbo. Can I do this, will I have to do any other mods to make it happen. I would just go buy a Tsi but I have just bought a 68 Impala so money is thin and cams don't seem to be that hard to find and fairly cheap if I would buy them used. Thanks for the help.

You can do it. There is a certain combo that is most desirable (the cams are stamped on the ends). It's somewhere along the lines of a 1990 set is the same as the non-turbo (2.0 L) sets, so don't get those, you would want something from (I think) a 93 manual transmission turbo engine. I can't find it in DSMTalk, but I have the link at home. I'll post it when I get home.

you only have to change the intake cam because the exhaust cams on both models are the same. the intake is different though because the turbo model allows more air into the engine. and yes, get one from a 1GB manual tranny car

Thanks, with the swap will I notice a power gain and will this affect my idle it is a daily driver

The DSM link was a geat help and thanks for sending it to me. I found a set of 92 talon turbo cams marked D,F is this a good set up? From what I read 92 was the best year and D is the best for the intake but what about the F, is it still a good choice? Lastly what does a set of used cams run for?

Hope you don't mind if I give this thread a bump. I've been trying to find some good info on this I've got a 91 n/t that I'm rebuilding and wanted to drop some turbo cams in while I had it out. So If I'm reading the link posted earlier correctly The ideal cams to have are an "A" stamped for intake and "E" or "F" for exhaust? My only question is, I have checked my cams and they're both stamped "A" (mine's an auto), so no doubt I need to find a different exhaust cam. But is "a" still the best intake cam I see that it has the most lift but would the others have a longer duration? I have rewired my fuel pump and am running iridium plugs, so I was curious also if a quick burst of fuel i.e. the "a" type cam with the most liftwould be benificial or if spreading it out witha longer duration would work better? Any ideas from experienced builders welcome.

Over the past couple of years I had been doing the same research looking for whatever gains I could find when it came to the n/t set-up. I originally dropped in some 92 TSI 5-speed cams to see if they made a difference. By themselves, there wasn't a whole lot. You would need as many supporting mods to cooperate together to see any significant results. Once you get other things to allow it to breathe better (CAI, port job, oversized valves, etc.), then having a larger cam will show it's true gains. When doing further research, what we are looking for are intake cams with not only the largest lift, but the longest duration as well. In this way it is a little different from the turbo set-up, who are more worried about lift only, to an extent. I dropped in the largest intake cam possible when it came to lift and duration, while keeping the exhaust cam stock to keep the vacuum up to prevent extremely rough idle. I ended up needing to completely upgrade my fuel system to keep up with the airflow. So far very impressed with the results. But I would consider doing other modifications before dropping in new cams, unless you need to do head work anyway. But the cams would be a nice finishing touch to whatever you are working on. Just some advice so you aren't blowing money into a project you might be disappointed with the immediate results.

93 Tsi M/T cams in mine. Smoother powerband, and a noticeably difference. No hesitation between 3.5 and 4k now. The 93 is the most aggressive IIRC. No messing with fuel, etc. should be required; its not like they are 272's. Idles just fine.

For those of you who have replaced your cams, where did you get them from? & What did you pay for them?

Streetsleeper, I kinda left it unsaid that I do have all the things you listed the CIA, port/gasket matched intake and exhaust, and the fuel pump I said was rewired was actually scrapped to have a chip that supposedly raised the pump pressure 2psi, not installed waiting to put in with cams a 4-2-1 header and high flow cat would also go in at the same time I'm a bang for the buck kind of guy (like everybody I think) that likes as much reliablity as you can get with a dsm. so that being said does anyone know the stamping marks for the most aggressive stock cam combo? Thanks
