:dsm: hey guys hows its going, i have a question on my engine. i recently purchased a 95 eagle talon FWD N/T. Its been parked id say 6months, it turns on and engine sounds good on idle but when i go past say 1200rpm it has a clicking noise not clanking. Guy i got it from said it had a broken piston, the engine doesnt shake or anything. I droped the oil and checked for metal from the crank or bearing but there wasnt flake It had 1.5 quarts in it and when i pulled the oil filter it was 4 spins lose. Maybe the guy ran it without oil? Anyway the car runs, idles, just that little clicking noise. maybe something with the vavle train? well any suggestion are acceptable. - Thank you

Listen to the engine while the hood is up. Does it sound like the ticking is coming from the top of the engine? If so, it may be the lifters.

I would make sure to replace the oil and oil filter.

Do you know what prompted the previous owner to tell you it had a "broken piston"?

i have changed the oil but left the old filter on tommorow i gonna drop that oil and pull the filter and cut it see if anything in it. the noise seems on the head. well i hope its nothing to expensive. also is it ok to run the car this way? i want to do a quick run around the block see how my 1st dsm feels , anyway thanks alot a appreciate your help

Does the lifter tick plague the Chrysler motor DSMs too? I didn't know it did. Anyways, take a long screwdriver and put the handle to your ear and place it on various parts of the valve cover and see if you can pinpoint where it's coming from exactly, and if it's coming from multiple sources. What you need to do first is rent/buy a compression tester and test the cylinder compression according to the instructions on the box, or maybe there's a faq on here on how to do it. If there's anything wrong with the bottom end, that'll pretty much give you a clue. If the car had a broken piston, I wouldn't imagine it would run too well.

Well go buy/rent a compression tester and it will tell you all about how to use it :) It's simple. Pull power to the fuel pump, hold the throttle wide open, have all spark plugs removed (some methods differ on this), and then install the guage hose into cylinder 1 and crank it about 3 turns and record the pressure on the guage. That'll let you know if everythings ok on the inside.

Yeah, It's a pretty general problem. It happens in any situation where the lifters can get dirty.

i was told by a source that if i mix transmission oil with my motor oil it will thin it out and clean the lifters. Also told to dump out the old gas abd buy SEAFOAM its cleans the lifters as well.

I've never head about the tranny oil mix, but it certainly makes sense. Transmission fluid is usually just 5W-30 motor oil with high levels of detergents. It won't harm the engine in anyway; and it definitely has the potential to clean it.

Seafoam is a great all around engine cleaner, buy a can at your local Autozone and read the can for directions.

Putting seafoam in your tank wont clean your lifters. It will clean out your fuel system though. This sounds like lifter tick or a bad cam bearing. If the previous owner ran it low or out of oil the first thing im my experence to go bad is the cam bearings. They can get loud and only get works. If you take off your valve cover you might see it if that is your problem.

I just pulled this from Seafoam's website,

When Added to Crankcase (Oil)

Frees sticky lifters and rings
Increases R.P.M.'s vacuum and compression
Cleans dirty parts
Removes moisture
Cleans PCV valve systems

One pint treats 10 quarts of oil (avg. 1 1/2 ounce per quart).

I would add about 7 1/2 ounces and let it work its magic. Its a petroleum product, so don't worry about it doing any damage to your engine. Let it run in your car for a while (maybe a week?) and then change your oil again.

Ok here it is I had a 95 Eclipse with the 420A. Good things is the first thing thatds goes ids the timing belt. If ya only had 1.5 qts. ## lifters were starving for oil...Just refill and drive it around(no racing) until the lifters get oil...

I got home from work late tonight, tommorow i will be getting in early should i drain a quart of oil and put the trans fluid in and maybe run it for a few hours? or just change the oil and add seafoam?

Add the Seafoam to the oil you have in there now. You won't be adding alot, so I wouldn't worry about draining of the old oil. Drive the car with the Seafoam in there for a while (up to two weeks, you want to give it time to work), then change the oil.

Seafoam can be used as a complete oil additive, meaning you don't really need to change the oil at all - I'm just recommending it since there'll probably be alot of crud coming from your head if it's giving you symptoms like lifter tick.

While the tranny fluid has a high detergent composition, it's not quite as potent as Seafoam. I would just stick with Seafoam to fix this.

i didnt get to read the thread when i got home i went straight to my car. i drained a quart of engine oil and put 1qt trans fluid in along with about 1/4 of sea foam. i turned it on for a good 5 minutes then moved around in my back yard for another 5. i left it on for another 5 minutes. this isnt my daily driver just a little something i picked up for my enjoyment. should i drive around my neighborhood or just let it idle and if so about how long per day? :talon:
