264 vs 272 pro cons

Hey everyone, going to be putting cams in the car over the winter. Going HKS 264/272 or 272/272.


My question, pros and cons of going 272 vs a 264 intake cam. I know the 264 helps even out idle alot. But what other differences are between the two?

for info car has a evo16g, with more then enough supporting mods. porting in exhaust mani, o2 houseing and exhaust side of the turbo.

If it were me, Id go straight to the 272's. When I do cam's they will be Comp 101200's, or basically equivelant to 272's. I feel that 264's, although better w/ idle, still don't provide enough power up top. Now I do feel that 101200's or 272's will still be good at idle, and are from everyone that I have talked too, w/out cam gears or degreeing of them. And they pull from 3k to 7500 rpms, and I want that setup there.
 
I have 264's in my car and I def noticed an improve in spool time and actual low end torque compared to stock cams. They seem to pull all the way to stock rev limit. The only reason I contemplate getting rid of them now is because I rebuilt my motor and its full built now valve train and ported. So I could use the larger duration. The 264's before hand though were def. worth it dropped in and never had a bit of problems with them.

Or do the Comp 101200's. They have pretty much the same grind as the FP2's and cost less then them. Don't make me pull out old threads to show you proof.
 
I dont need proof, I know they're "almost" the same. The difference is that the FP version can be installed "straight up" and make maximum power, whereas the Comps typically need to be degreed.

FWIW, I've got HKS 272s in my car and it idles as well as my friend's 264/272 setup.

Thats the most untrue statment Ive read to date.
I've spoke w/ 3 guys on tuners running the 101200's, all said they were installed "straight up" w/ no degreeing of cams whatsoever, w/ an averagle gain to 65whp and 1/2 sec of of E.T. And stock like idle, hmm, thats not bad for no degreeeing. So then, later, my friend bought a set of Comp101200's brand new for $400 and we put them in. No degreeing, no cam gears, just "straight up". The car fired right up, idled like stock, it even had us scared for a minute, until we drove it. Boost came on a tad later, but then from about 4k all the way to 7800, it pulled like mad. This has been over a month ago, and still to this day, has no degreeing to the set of cams. This is why I am a big Comp fan.

You might want to talk to FP then. Read post #88:

Hmmm, I supposedly have 264/264, but these comments make me wonder if I didn't actually end up with 272/272's in the car somehow. I have about no low end at all, and the thing really starts pulling at 5k. It's still pulling harder and harder, right into the 8k limiter and all I've got is a 16g @ 12.5 psi on a 9:1 motor...
 
I have 272/272 in the car now and idle is not a concern, I love them. Next set of cams will be from F/P if only for the reason that Grocerius Maximus is the new messiah and I want to help make his car payment. Better him than some unknown at HK$ or Comp don't you think?
 
Jerry, I think you should listen to everyone and go with the comps or fp2's. You have heard my car idle and same with dave's. He has the 272's and his idle isnt near as clean as mine. On the dyno, mine made the most power with the ex cam retated 2*(4 hp more) and the intake stright up. Plus, the hks cams will cost more with no difference in performance. Mine also picked up 2 tenths in the 1/8 mile with cams alone when I had the 16g.
 
thanks keith, yea i am pretty much going to listen to eveyone and get the fp2 cams. That much cheaper, and no huge difference between the 2, HKS maybe not being as good even. Im not out to buy a name, i want a good product, the best for my $ so, looks like fp2s are going to be it

I have FP2s, many can't tell by the idle, No opinions on others - but you will not be unhappy with FP2s
 
yea, i guess i do need to update that timeslip there keith. That pass was when i still have the 14b on the car LOL oops

oh well, and yes its just like you, to lazy to do it
 
Would going 264/264 yield faster spool time than a 264/272 setup? If I read this correctly a 272/272 setup will cause my boost to come on later. I dont really care much for top end as I really want as close to instant power as can be with a turbo setup.

What setup should I get?
 
I've got the comp 200's. Can't really tell a difference at idle but top end you certainly can. Of course my car also idles at about 950. Down at the stock 750 you can hear alittle rumble from the cams. And for the record min eare installed straight up. Though i do plan on degreeing them at some point.

I don't notice a difference at idle w/ these cams either, although I'm sure the no balance shafts, prothane engine mounts, and exhaust don't help the cause to notice. I idle at 1k approx, with the occasional spurratic dsm high idle, need to clean some things! I still spool 20psi by 4k and thats right about where it should be w/ my fwd.
 
I have the comp 100s but would go with the 2X if I were to do it again. The 100s are real torquey but fall of at 7300. FP has the 1x and 2X cams out now too look into that as well.

Yea, I just got a set of FP2x cams in the mail. I was debating on FP2s or 272s and then said screw it got the FP2xs and themoney i saved from the 272s I got a set of Manely springs that SBR said could handle the 2xs easily to 8500+ rpms.
