California, USA,
Just finished the "Free Mods" recommended on this site (... thanks!) ... except for cutting out around the vents in the splash shield leading to the intercooler. I'm just a little worried about rocks, etc. damaging the intercooler. Will regular window screen really provide adequate protection ... or is there a better approach?

When I first got my 1g, the splash guard would not fatsen down, and so the front tire basically rubbed the middle out of it, so, it basically was not there. I ran this way for about 2 years in the NorthWest. I just recently pulled out my IC and found minimal damage, and it actually wasn't all that dirty.

It does a lil b/c it allows cool air to hit the IC but a better thing to do is take the IC out pour gasoline in the end tank swish it around a few seconds(cover both end tanks unless u like the smell of gasoline on your clothes) then pour it out. Keep doing that until the Gasoline comes out clean.

I've done that one time and it really cleaned out the gunk in my intercooler.

Hey,
my car doesnt have the fender well splash guards, and i was wondering, if this winter, is ice going to build up on my intercooler and make it not work?

or woudl the air temps inside it, be hot enough to keep ice from forming?

You're actually better off without the splash guard. Better airflow to the intercooler. And I doubt ice would build up on it, but even if it did don't worry about it.

kool thanks,
only thing that might happen is debris hitting it, and bending the fins,
my old ic, i let my dad drive, and my drive way was real muddy, and usually, i go slow til the mud flies off, but no, he has to go fast and beat the ic all to hell.

if ice was to cover ic woouldnt it make it really cold and make air that goes threw really cold? isnt cold air good for ur enigne?

actually,
the way i see it, the intercooler works by air passing through it absorbing heat from the channels as it goes. if the back is plugged up with ice, the air cant get through, the cold air on the other side of the ice will keep it from melting, but the air will not pass though the intercooler so it wont dissipate much heat.

I took my splash guard off last spring. I haven't any any problems with ice or anything else. I live in SD and it's been snowing plenty lately but I never notice anything building up. :thumb:

only thing i am getting is mud splatter from my driveway.

You got that right. However, as long as the snow / ice is in contact with the fins it won't need any air circulation If it's 0 degrees and you want the incoming engine air to be colder than that of melting ice/snow (32f) then remove it. That's not going to be absolute for the IC isn't going to exchange at 100% effiency.

Cheers,
GTM

i replaced mine with this stuff i got at the local hardware store, it seems to work good, keeps stuff from beating down my IC and i get the good airflow and i put it on both sides so it would match. i have the bumper off right now but i think it looks perty good when its all together and you look at it from the outside of the car.

To protect my intercooler fins after I took off the splash guard, I used a square of medium fencing mesh on each "face" of the intercooler. I just cut the mesh slightly larger than each face, then bent the edges around to keep it in place. The stuff I used was made out of 1/4" squares.

I ran my car without it all summer but since it started snowing here there has been alot of sand on the roads and just the other day I noticed that there were a bunch of little rocks getting jammed in between the fins and yes, blocking airflow. I put it back on yesterday.

Where do you get such silly notions?

On white cars, it saves the cost and hassle of lowering kits.

the splash shield thats protecting the intercooler....
i heard its good to take it off so you can get better air flow

but my question is

what if it rains while im driving.....wouldn't the rain water clog up the intercooler coming off the tire???

and what about snow???
wouldn't that get caught up in the intercooler?

Ive had mine off for a while and im putting them back on...every time it rains it gets muddy water all over everything under the hood...it dosnt really hurt anything or clog anything, and water is actually good for the intercooler it just looks like the inside of a asshole all the time under the hood. Leave the splash sheilds on..just cut a hole out of the one on the intercooler side. :thumb:

I don't know if it'd snow-clog or not. I know my whole wheelwell did, but that's with the hideous stuff we get in the Sierra- apparently it's some of the wettest snow on the planet. Does wonders for unsightly wheel gap, though.

But your best bet is to just enlarge the vents, and mostly leave the shield there.

They're cheap! $16.12 at https://www.mitsubishiparts.com/oe_parts_catalog.html. I've had a cracked one for months and thought I would comb the junkyards for it someday. Never thought to actually check the new price until recently. They come with all the hardware and take minutes to replace.

Maybe no one but you admires the inside of your fenders but it's easier that painting if your into that clean inner fender look.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

Are you talking about the splash shield that tucks into the front bumper in the wheel well? If so, I've been looking for some replacements as well. I had to drive my car without the front bumper and they rubbed into the tires ROFL
