I got tired of the funky looking Auto shifter and decided to do away with it. So I bought a Autotecnica Auto shifter knob from JCW and installed it. But it just didn't look right with the automatic shifter shaft and bezel.

Then the other week I stummbled onto a nice 96 Talon ESI at a local scrap yard that was fairly complete (minus engine, suspension, and the driver side was smashed in) and had a near mint interior. So I grabbed some tools out of my car and started to remove some of the dash trim pieces (I wanted to experiment with painting them). I noticed that the car had a manual shifter and a lightbulb went off in my head. I could remove it for use in my car with my modded auto shift knob. So I removed the entire shift boot assembly (boot & plastic retaining ring).

Back at home I began installing the boot into my car. The boot was easy enough as it just screwed onto the underside of the center console. But the console would not go back on with the auto-shifter bezel still in place. So I remove all the plastic pieces from the auto-shifter assembly and then re-installed the ceter console to the floor.

I then painted all of the dash trim pieces with black vinyl/interior paint and installed them to complete my interior make over. Check it out...............

I've seen it before. He's not the first but that definitely looks tight. :thumb:

Now, about those NOS floormats...

they are ugly so he doesn't mind getting them all dirty and muddy...

Wouldn't want to put nice ones in would you in the winter?

What do you use for the Overdrive button?

You can just barely see the toggle switch I installed (semi blocked by the park brake handle button). But it's only a on-off toggle which doesn't work quite right. When the switch is "on" it shifts the tranny into OD but the dash light comes on saying that the OD is off! When the switch is in the "off" position the OD is off and so is the dash light. So the dash light says that the OD is off when it is actually on. I may have to splice the original switch back in and hide it under the center console somewhere.

NOS floor mats RULE!!!! ;)
Just using them until the winter/spring mud season is over.

Looks good. :thumb: I'm an auto driver too and I hate the stock knob. I just got a new Razo one for my b-day. I'll see how it looks as soon as I get the car running.

That ideas been in my head for about 3 weeks now. ive been to low on money to go purchase a boot/knob though. I was wondering what I was gonna do with the OD button. Looks good man, Im definitely gonna do it now.

Looks great, very nice job. Where did you get info on relocating the o/d button, or did you just figure it out?

iv been looking for a knob to replace the stupid stock one.

ithink the 2gs have it on the Guage cluster AND on the shifter. Redundant if you ask me.

so just fix the piece on the guage cluster to where it says nothing (clear) or just with a rub on lettering kit "OD" and leave the light on to say OD is engaged.

Just an easier way out of trying to put the OEM switch in...

Nah, after you've driven your auto for awhile you don't even have to look because of all the lockouts -- not anymore than you need a gear indicator in a 5-speed :)
