:dsm: I have a 1996 Eclipse GS, and it's Automatic  . How hard will it be to switch to a manual. I figured that since the hole in the console for the shifter is the same in Auto and Manual, why can't I just switch em. I know I'll need to have the clutch put in and get rid of my torque converter and all that, but how much is it gonna cost me. I'm 17, so I have limited money here. Does anyone have anything that might help me out?

Yes you can convert it just use parts off a 95-99 2.0NA. The conversion is quite time consuming, and costs a lot of $$$. It could cost you anywhere from $1000 to $3000+. You could get all the parts at a yard and convert it yourself if you have the technical knowledge and that'll save you some $. Good luck! :thumb:

:dsm: It would be nice to just sell the one I have and get a Manual GS-T or GSX, but I can't afford that either. I kinda want to work with what I have just to prove it can be as fast as these lil Hondas a see everywhere. So what parts am I looking at getting a hold of? I'll have to go by a local junk yard and see if I can find a wrecked Manual. Do I have to switch the ECU or just reset it?

From what I've heard, the covnersion would be extremely costly and time consuming. I would seriously think about just trading it in for the factory 5-speed version of your car and go from there. IMO, that would be much more practical and economical.

:dsm: Maybe you're right....the turbo never stops in an Auto does it? Hmm, maybe I will keep my auto and just build from there. Speaking of, does anyone know of an Auto Shifter in say carbon or aluminum that will replace the one I have?

Just the shift knob? any autoshift knob would do. I put a momo automatic knob in a friend's avenger... just remove the stock one and put the new one on.... get a nice leather boot to cover the stock and base (you'll lose the ability to check what gear you're in by looking at the center console though... not that it makes a difference at all).

If you have a power button on the shifter, you can buy a switch and rewire it to somewhere on your dash. it's a 30 minute job tops.
There's a pic of the result

I just ran some wires from the shifter to the dashboard (3 wires) and bought a $3 pushbutton at radioshack. any 3 pole dual position toggle button should do.

:dsm: Aight, I might do that. I did find a new shifter from Razo that looks pretty good and has an O/D button. It's $125 though. This car just keeps getting more expensive, LOL

automatics can be made fast but it naturally takes money and of course you don't have the pleasure of shifting. Another downside is the extra robbed HP from the auto tranny.

look on the bright side...it shifts faster and u dont loose power from it like u would with a manual.
u just cant downshift

That's wierd. I always thought automatics lost more power through the drivetrain than a manual.

They do... but i think what he meant was as far as turbos go, you don't lose a lot of boost when you shift like you do in a manual... But you have a GS, so i don't see how this is applicable anyway.

Who ever mentioned MY car and what makes you think I own a GS:confused: I am talking about cars in general.

The thread seems to be straying from the original topic though, which was posted by the owner of a '96, automatic, and oh yeah, GS.

If we're going to switch to the turbo subject though, the question is: does the boost gain make up for the drivetrain power loss in the long run? I dare to disagree.

Yeah... sorry, i meant the guy who originally posted... his car is a GS....

The auto vs. manual debate has gone on forever is this board.... i don't intend to turn this thread into one as well... but..... i think the conclusions were..... an auto can be quick with a shift kit, but people have their own preferences... to each his own. And if you were wondering, i prefer stick as well, but i'll defend the strong points of either.
