Hey guys, well my car died on the highway last week, and I had my car towed to a shop to figure out what was wrong with it. Turns out that the balance shaft broke, and they say I need a new engine. I thought you could run DSMs without a balance shaft. Does this really mean I need a new engine??

One more thing, I plan on dropping the oil pan for a closer inspection tomorrow morning, I just did a quick check when it happened just to make sure my rods were still there. I know that if there are big chunks of whatever thrown about in there, a rebuild is a fair bet...but the mechanics didn't drop the pan, they just took the timing belt off and found the problem.

BACKGROUND:
Just had a evo 16g installed a couple days before. Coolent temps were at 246* when I pulled over... a little warm, but no steaming from the engine. Car stalled and would not idle until I came back a few hours later. The knocking noise I heard came in waves at idle, and got louder with RPMs.

They should be more specific. When the balance shaft in my motor seized it took out the timing belt, which took out the head, and knicked 3 out of 4 pistons, and broke almost every valve. So, basically, I had to go with an entirely new motor. I used the block, which had a heat spot visible on the outside of the block, but the shop said it should be fine.
