like the title says I'm new to DSM'S I'm buying a 90 gst in great condition has an evoIII big 16g on it only issue is that it blew the balance shaft so ima throw an eliminating kit fot that but since Ima have the engine torn down what do you guys recommend I do to it or upgrade and or replace on it any tips you have to offer and help u can give me would be appreciated thanks

i would put race bearings in it. also i would look into the revised lifters if it doesnt already have them. i would also get away from using the hydrolic tensioner. make sure you dont reuse your old timing belt and if you can i hear its good to use the timing belts from the mitsu dealerships. and ofcourse while its out you might as well inspect all your hoses they are cheap to replace.

Thaks and what are the lifters?

And I've been doing some reading but still don't quite understand what are the egr block off plates for?

i understand that part.. but removing the vacuum lines is just that physically removing them? then some talk about ISC something.. im so lost..

What are your plans for this motor? Before doing any large project like this you should ALWAYS have a realistic goal realistic being the key word. Once you have that then people can recommend the appropriate path to obtain that goal.

How far are you taking the motor down? Is this a completely new rebuild or just throwing in a BSE kit? Are you pulling the motor or doing the BSE in car? What is your budget? What problems did the motor have before the balance shaft "blew up"?

All of those questions will determine what needs to be upgraded or replaced VS what people want replaced. At the very minimum hoses and vacuum lines should be replaced with quality parts. Anythign that leaks should be fixed and any wires that have seen better days should be addressed.

As for the EGR it can just be unhooked and left on the car but for a cleaner look and a bit more space under hood (hardly any in reality) you can just use a block off plate. The ISC is a little motor that keeps the idle steady when an extra load is placed on the motor such as the A/C kicking on, fans kicking on, lights etc....

i have it completely out completely torn down.. i work at a hot rod shop and am use to American Muscle soo this is like apples and bananas to me.. the only similarity is that theyre fruit i.e. cars LOL

i want to get it in the 300 hp+ area..

and really my limit is about 1200 to completely rebuild the engine and get it running

If you are looking at that budget and that power level then a stock rebuild would be fine. The only real upgrades I would suggest for this would be maybe 2G or EVO pistons, 3G lifters for the head, and depending on how much is left maybe some EVO spring and retainers although they won't really help much unless you plan on putting cams in it at some point. Depending on machining cost you could probably do all that for 1200.00 if you assemble the motor yourself.
