I was on my way to a friends house today on a backroad crusing at around 30 mph, I got on it a tiny bit, maybe up to around 45 tops, then slowed back down, and noticed my oil pressure light turned on. So i went up a couple more blocks, watching the pressure gauge, which appeared normal still. I stopped at a stop-sign and when i started again and heard a belt squeel, and it did sound like a normal squeel, so i rev'ed the engine a little in neutral, then all the sudden i saw the pressure drop way down, so i pulled over less then a block up at the first spot i could and got out of the car. Oil all over my drivers side wheel. Popped the hood and there was oil all over the timing belt side of the motor, from the underside of the hood, covering the alt, wheel well, and dripping from all over on the underside. It looked like my dipstick was sticking partially out, and it has a pretty weak seal, so i thought i had just blow the dipstick and sprayed everywhere. I got a ride to shmucks and picked up a few quarts of mobile1, went back to the car and filled it up. I started the car up and jumped out to look under really quick, and it immediately started spewing all of the oil onto the ground, so i shut it down right away. I was only a mile or so from home, so a friend came and towed me home with a tow strap. So the turd is at home safe now, and i'll have to clean it up tomorrow and hopefully be able to see where the oil was coming from. Whatever it is, its a very large opening, because it spewed 2-3 quarts in about 5 seconds. I'm hoping its something simple, or something that i can salvage from my 91 because i dont get paid until next week and i just got back from vacation for my birthday 2 days ago. I'd appricate any input on what it could be that would spew like that. Its somewhere behind the alt. area, dzl met me out there to take a look, and we couldnt determine any more specifically where its coming from.

If its something major, i hope drake has some open time in the next few weeks. I'm glad i didnt sell my hooptie daily driver buick like i was thinking about doing. I now have TWO jackstand warming POSDSM's. Gotta love em.

Check the oil filter housing after you get it cleaned up. 1gb's are known for having problems with the housing and the filter coming loose or even falling off. If it's in the area of the atl you could check the seal behind the crank pulley or maybe cam seals?

Yep I agree totally with him, 1g's are notorious for oil filter selas going bad, but if its leaking that bad I'd say your oil filter has fallen off or is about to fall off. Only thing I can think of, hope ya get it up n goin. :dsm: 4life

The spray of the oil was much more excessive than if it were just the oil filter, and the oil sprayed all the to the hood, and all the way to my wheel well and rims.

Well the oil is in a pressurized system so if a seal lets go it will spray everywhere. When my dipstick blows out at high RPM I get oil everywhere in the engine bay.The location of the filter housing makes it kinda difficult to spray onto the hood and the top of the motor but I wouldn't rule it out just yet. Even if the filter isn't loose it could still be the housing or maybe the sending unit or something like that. Have you checked all your oil feed lines and seals?

I stand corrected. I got it all cleaned up yesterday and i tightened down the filter which was really loose, and put a few more quarts in it and turned it over a few times. Sure enough, coming out of the top side of the oil filter housing. Looks like a pretty easy fix, I'm going to pull the one off my 91 today, hopefully everything will be good after that. Thanks for the help

FIXED - it was the oil filter housing gasket, which seems to just be an oil filter gasket. I replaced the gasket with an oil filter gasket and everything seems to be good. Drove it around a little bit and everything was fine, didnt leak at all. Glad it was an easy fix

Hey.

I had the exact same problem.

Only thing is that the timing belt or something sounds like a squeeks a bit when the A/C is turned on. Its not very loud but you can def hear it a tiny bit when the hood is opened.

Any suggestions on the problem?

Thanks!

Glad to hear you got her fixed and are back up and running. Just keep a closer eye on it as it is likely to happen again. Here is a link from the VFAQ that explains why this happens and to fix it. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/oilcool.html
