Straight from the streets of California. Complete with an underbody partially working neon kit. Warped and rattle can painted body kit, awsome blue graphics, 100% unique interior sticker kit included, and an engine that goes cold to overheated in 3.4 minutes, I present to you:

MY NEW USED 1996 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE GSX!!:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

So i got a gsx, picked it up for 1k. Not the best running or looking GSX, by far, but for 1k, clean title, can hardly pass it up. The engine was rebuilt and has 50k miles on it, but it over heats and smokes after about 3 mins. White smoke comes form the exhaust and the engine bay, so I am betting on crack in the block or a blown head gasket.

I am looking to do an engine swap from a 98 GSX with a built engine and also take the buscher racing transmission out of the 98 and swapping it all into the 96. Once that is complete, tune it up and hopefully I am driving a nicely built GSX. I'll let you know how it goes, for now, enjoy the before pictures, i got some work ahead of me to "de-rice" it a bit, like for instance, the day i got the car, the only thing i did to it was take out those god dam blue interior stickers, god..

Cheers!

I'll get more pics up after i get done redoing the interior this weekend, already redid the DVD player which was litterally masking tapped to where it is sitting int he picture, with an extra screw on my center console that did.. nothing to my knowledge.. and the equalizer had screws on the side of it so it wouldn't fall back behind the center console LOL. This guy was special, to say the least.

Best of luck with the new project. Though from the outside looking in 1k looks like a great deal, I hope you don't find issues compunding issues, compunding more issues.

From the outside, I'd kill the graphics. Other than that, and the overheating it looks like a good find! Once again, best of luck. Maybe I'll see it sometime while cruising in Cali.

I saw that on craigslist for the longest time. It is the ONLY AWD 2g DSM I've seen on there for MONTHS! Well ok I'm over exagurating. There were like 2-3 2g awds.

I like that 2g awds are so rare these days, and I have 2 right in my garage :p

There are always so many 2g GSTs on craigslist.

What mods did that one on craigslist come with? Also PM me if you are going to sell anything from it. I am local.

Well first off, the ad was completly wrong, he was asking 6k at first, and I talked him down to 1k, so there are alot of problems. The car has a knock off EVO III 16g, supra fuel pump, a litterally glued on HKS BOV I will be getting rid of (I love the 1g BOV <3) full Magnaflow turboback 3", the dream exhaust i wanted on my GST :D Has new slave and master clutch cylinder. He says stage 3 clutch, but doesn't feel like it. The neon lights are not grounded properly and kinda flicker, and not even work on one side LOL. It does have a Greddy FMIC, but has long/stock route piping. That is fine by me because i have the dejon UICP that routed stock location.

I was "buying" this car for several weeks til i finally broke his soul and talked him from 6k down to 1k. The DVD system does have A\V in, which means from the labtop or pda I can have the screen on there, which I think will be really cool, and clean.

The car has so much random broken things the longer i look at it. The body is not 100% perfect, but the frame is undamaged and has a clean title so I will take time to get it all straight and repaint it, because he, looks like, litterally spray painted the body kit (after he installed it on the car because here is overspray on the stock body parts WTF!! and the reverse lights ont he car have green paint on them too. He didn't pre paint or at at least mask it off >.<)

Will be alot of work, but for 1k, I thought it would be a good starting point, because at that price, I was able to keep the GST as a daily driver now.

The plans for the car are a little beyond me alone, but I am looking for help from friends. I am looking to get a 2.3 stoker kit for the car, port and polished head, .40 over bored, with forged pistons and rods. I am thinking maybe to get a 6 bolt swap because to have all that power I SHOULD have a 6 bolt, but that may be beyond me and any of my friends mechanical capability.

I plan on selling the knock off turbo and get a real Mitsubishi evo III 16g, new 550/maybe 650cc injectors, and finally, on my shopping list, DSMlink.

I am really looking to go big here now that after being int he car scene for over a year or so, I want to start doing some tuning and looking to make 300-350 AWD as my set goal. I am rebuilding the engine because once I start making that power, I don't want to worry about my engine breaking on me.

But as of this weekend, looking to just do a stock 7 bolt engine swap from a 98 and tranny swap from the 98, just so i can get on the road, and rebuild the 96 engine or maybe a 6 bolt on an engine stand. Once the GSX is running, I will sell the GST to fund my little engine project, and than, well I don't know, but that is the plan for now.

Of course, there will be lots more pictures and update here on tuners, so keep an eye out :D AWD baby, I am so happy <3

More about the car's current state. The engine is gone, he has glued BOV, the turbo coupling is falling off LOL, the radiator cap has a hole in it, the UICP has leaks in it (which was the problem the car had when I test drove the car for the first time) the o2 housing has smoke coming from it.

The car over heats in like 3 mins, I had to drive it from San Fransico Air port 25 miles home. It took 4 and a half hours to get it home.. I havn't pulled the engine yet, but like i said, I think it is either a leaking head gasket, or a crack in the block. It has white smoke coming from it when it start to get the point of over heating, loses all power, and soon as i let off the gas, it just shuts down.

A boost leak would cause it to not boost and have trouble accelerating, but it doesn't even idle, i have to give it gas to keep it on, even on a cold start. Before the car started smoking, it idled between 1k-2k going up and down like it was reving itself.

Basicly, I need to do alot of engine work >.<

Got any idea or input, feel free to pitch in :D

With that kind of overheating it could just be a bad water pump. Is there any way to check the circulation? I guess you could just disconnect the pipe and see if coolant keeps getting pushed out one end - very messy.
Not to mention with the coupler coming off and the leaks, you've gotta be getting completely wrong readings on the air flow!

EDIT: Haha, that's what I get for not posting and having the thing sitting in an extra window.... I wrote this like ten minutes ago, but didn't post :p Oh, and it sounds like it might be the IAC motor causing the fluctuations.

funny, i found this cool little thing in the trunk:

wonder if he was thinking something similar?

Yea forgot to mention he has the 2ga and 2gb wings on there. He shaved the 2ga wing on the trunk, but not the ones on the rear quarter panels..

w/e ROFL

and no it is not just a waterpump, the car sounds like a loud loud LOUD asss ticking noise when idling/driving wether cold or hot. I problably should fix it all I can without pulling the engine, but it just seems easier in a way to check the engine anyways. It was rebilt 11k miles ago, he has the reciept, so all that stuff shouuld have been replaced, but you never know eh?

sigh.. if I ever get more time to myself, I will deffinatly have to take time to go out and try and fiddle with it myself before I pull the engine.

I am really looking to go big here now

And you are getting only an evo 3 16g with your 2.3L stroker. That is not going big, that is going mediocore in terms of DSMs, especially in the bay area DSM scene, where 50trims are the smallest turbo upgrades most of us have. :)

jk, not to get any 16g owners pissed off (i was once myself), but if you are "looking to og big here now"

I would rethink your plans.

Keep us up with the car, let me know what you go to sell.

Ok ok, so it is not big to some of you DSMers, but for me engine work and a turbo like that is a huge step in my book :D

I worry that a turbo too big will have too much lag for me to enjoy, and if I start going into a t3/t4 50 trim, I will end up needing more supporting mods, more pressure, more money, time, and gas :p

I'll let you know how it goes, today and tomorrows plan is just de-ricing, I'll get some pics up of that because it is already starting to look better.

forum poll: Do i keep the already installed neons on because you would use them once a month lets say, or just take them off because they weigh 5 pounds the car don't need? I know it is my choice blah blah, but gimme your opinions :D

i would say you got a pretty good deal. with a clean title and running, $1000 barley gets you a geo metro nowadays! oh, and ditch the neons imo.

Aw, keep the neons on... it will help flagging down some help if you're ever by the side of the road! (j/k)

What color are they? If they're multi-color take them off. If it's just a single, easy-on-the-eyes color that doesn't show hanging down, then keep them. I'm sure you can fix the grounding problem and it would be nice for a sleek show look.
If you're just going for top speed, rip them off, but 5lbs isn't gonna wreck a little zippy fun - I'm assuming as is the case by the turbo choice.

Also keep us updated on what you're gonna off-load. We're always in the market for a good price ;)

Nice find man.Shells usually go for more than that. I would try to replace the water pump before i pulled the whole motor. You've come along way from your earlier posts of... "im not addicted to speed'' or "i want the bov for the way it sounds".:tease: I knew you would eventually eat those words.ROFL

Dang it you are right, i got owned by the need for speed. The neons are blue, and yea I can fix, the switch needs to be resoddered.

I need to get a sound clip for you guys, this engine does not sound good, at all. It sounds like a loud lawn mower that doesn't run very well, LOL. I don't think I can just replace other stuff and expect the engine to work magicly.

Nice little project you've got!

I'd do all the basic mechanical maintenance on it. Forget all the appearance for now. You may end up needing all those pennies for mechanical things. A pretty car that doesn't run is useless in my opinion.

Check out the turbo for shaft play. If it's still in good shape, you could leave it on until you save up for the real deal or run it until you feel the need for replacing it.

Search on "idle surge" to find out more about your idle problem.

Get the intake solid (no leaks, properly functioning BOV, tight intake-pipe-to-turbo coupler), vaccuum lines in place. Throw the 1g-flanged UICP on there if possible (I'm not sure what your long-route piping looks like).

Check fluids all the way around.

Once you get all those things fixed/checked, move to the harder things like the white smoke and O2 housing leak. It seems to me that it'd be easier to find out the big problems once you've fixed the little problems.

As for the thermostat, I find it hard to believe that you'd overheat in 3 minutes from a cold motor due to a failed-closed-thermostat.

And if you don't have a logger yet, go get one. My wife just got a palmIII for $1 at a garage sale. Works perfectly. Makes me mad, because my palmIIIc cost $80 on eBay refurbished (I like mine better...color, rechargable battery, backlit...but 80x more expensive?!). Then you can check other potential problems.

And since you're diving into the deep end on this sort of project, I highly recommend picking up manualcd (go to forcedperformance.com...the manualcd page redirects you there). That'll tell you everything about the stock DSMs.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well I still have all my GST mods, so I have the UICP and intake and 1g BOV. I strayed away from putting them all on the car just because it seems a waste to put them all on there only to take them off to do the engine swap.

I am pretty sure the white smoke is a something to do with the engine being bad. It isn;t just overheating but running fine. It make a loud sound while reving up, sounds like rattling even. Looking at new engines, I can get a JDM for 900-1400 I am told. There is always the option of a junk yard 6 bolt. What seems easiest to me is to just do a direct swap and rebuild the motor I pull out with all the new goodies, port and polish and drop the new rebuilt motor in later.

I just quit my second job. That will give me some time to take to myself and the car with just one job, but I still have to have a plan on what I want to do.

It appears, if I go and pick up the 98 GSX, we will be doing the stock engine swap in two weeks, but I also am thinking about just buying a JDM motor and swapping a 6 bolt, so many things to choose, but I don't really know what I want for sure :p

Ditch the body kit and stickers, then you can appreciate a true DSM.

oh yea, and the horribly painted blue dash too.

those weren't painted, those were stickers WTF!!

those weren't painted, those were stickers WTF!!
They are actually a vinyl set... I know i owned a set:notgood: but i took them of about 2 weeks after words about kicked my own butt for wasting money

But if it was rebuilt 11,xxxmiles ago is it covered under any type of warranty? Would they redo it for cheaper then buying another used engine? Or can always check the classifieds here i picked up a used 7bolt 900 shipped

Well the engine was done in Las Vegas, so not sure if I would have to get the car there or what. I'll ask the previous owner for the number to the shop and see if the Las Vegas shop can out source someone over here in the bay.

thanks for the idea.

Just curious, the red 2gb GST in your gallery looks to be in much better shape, why don't you just do an awd swap on it & use it as your platform? I know thats what I would do, for me it would probably take more time to swap everything from my GST to a GSX vs swapping the drivetrains. Atleast this way you know what your starting with....
