Cam Gears off

if the cam gears are off by one tooth, is that horrifically bad. my friend put his timing belt on and didint set the cam gears properly, he had the exhaust cam retarded 1 tooth and the intake was advanced 1 tooth

he had it run for like 15 seconds

It shouldn't have hurt anything, but it probably didn't run very well.

No, it's not enough to cause that. Motors stop real quick once the valves are kissed.

I am working to get a 90 Laser Turbo running. The intake cam jumped a couple of teeth. My question is how many teeth will it have to be off before the valves start to smack the pistons? I think mine's like 2-3 teeth off. Any answers will be appreciated.

I don't have the answer, but a compression test will tell you instantly.

I've had a belt jump 3 teeth before. Happened while cruising doing 70mph on the way to the track. Car wouldn't start, but also didn't damage any valves. I think I got lucky.

Thanks for the replies. The reason why I was asking was to find out whether or not it was worth it to take out the timing belt to get it back in time. I am also going to replace the tensioners. I have the Haynes manual and two of my friends are mechanics. Does anyone have any suggestions for me while I am doing this? It will be a first time for us.

Don't go by the Haynes/Chiltons manual. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of the DSM CD manual. It's 1,000,000x more detailed, and SHOWS you every single step, whereas the Chiltons just tells you how.
